On Thursday, Boston Red Sox pitcher Liam Hendriks took to his social media account and bashed some fans. The pitcher attacked them for sending ‘vile‘ death threats to him and his family following his team’s 5-1 loss against the New York Mets.

The 36-year-old came into the game on Wednesday night to relieve starting pitcher Garrett Crochet in the 6th inning. He ended up giving 3 hits in the seventh.

At the end, Hendriks was charged with the loss as the Red Sox lost 5-1 and failed to sweep the Mets in the 3-game series. Following the game, some angry fans would make their feelings known by sending some heinous comments towards Hendriks and his family.

Taking to his Instagram account, the Red Sox pitcher slammed the abusers and expressed that they needed ‘help’ and urged them to take a step back and re-evaluate their life.

Threats against my life and my wife’s life are horrible and cruel. You need help. Comments telling me to commit suicide and how you wish I died from cancer is disgusting and vile. Maybe you should take a step back and re-evaluate your life’s purpose before hiding behind a screen attacking players and their families.

The Australian pitcher returned to MLB action in May 2023 after battling stage 4 cancer. He also underwent Tommy John Surgery and was out of action for some time.

There have been some instances where fans have crossed a line this year. Earlier this season, a fan in Cleveland would heckle Hendriks’ teammate Jarren Duran and made a comment regarding his suicide attempt. The AL Central organization would later apologize to the player and the Red Sox for this behavior from the fan.

Liam Hendriks recently voiced frustration over his lack of usage by team

The Red Sox have taken things slowly with him since his return. This is something that has frustrated the pitcher.

Before the game on Wednesday, he vented his anger to The Boston Globe’s Alex Speier and expressed that he wants to pitch for the team and wants some opportunity to showcase his talent.

I just want to pitch. I feel like I can make contributions to this team. I feel like I can make a lot more contributions than I have been, and I just want to be given that opportunity.

He was then given a chance against the Mets later on. Unfortunately, things did not go as he would have hoped and he ended up taking the loss while giving up 3 hits and 3 earned runs.

Before this game, he had been used 10 times in the season from the bullpen. He had a 3.38 ERA before he entered the game against the Mets. Following his appearance, his ERA shot up to 5.56.

Manager Alex Cora admits team has not given Liam Hendriks much chances

Liam Hendriks did not hold back on Wednesday regarding his new role with the team. Following the criticism from him, manager Alex Cora admitted that he and his team have not given the 3-time All-Star enough chances.

So far this season, Hendriks has been used just 11 times. The team has opted to use some other options instead of him.

In the game on Tuesday, the Red Sox used 6 pitchers to see the game out after Walker Buehler was ejected from the game. Hendriks was not one of them.

While speaking regarding his lack of usage, Cora told the reporters that it was on him and seemingly admitted that they got to use him more and trust him.

We have to use him. That’s on me. That’s on the pitching department. We’ve got to trust him. There’s a reason he’s here. Been there, done that.

Following the loss on Wednesday, the Red Sox fell below the .500 win percentage. They are currently 25-26 for the season and will take on division rivals, Baltimore Orioles in their next outing.
