In mixed martial arts, opportunities often arrive suddenly, leaving fighters with limited time to prepare. Some embrace these moments as chances to prove themselves, stepping up under challenging circumstances to solidify their place in the division. UFC lightweight contender Mateusz Gamrot has once again positioned himself in the spotlight by publicly calling out Charles Oliveira ahead of UFC Rio.
The callout comes after the controversial UFC Rio main event between Oliveira and Rafael Fiziev was cancelled due to Fiziev pulling out due to an injury. However, the event was much anticipated by fans due to the Brazilian’s quick turnaround after a brutal knockout loss to Ilia Topuria at UFC 317. This has led fans to wonder who will be the replacement for his return to Brazil after 5 years.
Oliveira recently came out and expressed his distaste for lightweight contenders calling him out, only to fail to materialize when the officials presented them with the contract. His comments also reflected on Gamrot, who was vocal regarding his shot at the UFC Rio main event. He recently took to X and revealed that he is ready and back training for a potential fight against the Brazilian.
I hear you’re worried about my style, even though you had a full training camp. I had none, and still I’m ready to step into the cage. Two weeks left to prepare– and I’m already in ATT right here. No excuses, let’s do this. @CharlesDoBronxs @ufc

The Polish contender’s comments appear to stem from Oliveira’s concerns about fighting a wrestler after completing a comprehensive training camp for a bout against a striker. Other lightweight fighters who expressed a wish to fight Oliveira were Renato Moicano and Benoit Saint-Denis. Both fighters were vocal about stepping in on short notice, but neither followed up.
The Polish contender has been steadily building his reputation inside the UFC, with wins over dangerous contenders such as Arman Tsarukyan, Rafael Dos Anjos, and Jalin Turner. His most recent win against Ludovit Klein put him back in the win column after a split decision loss against Dan Hooker at UFC 305. ‘Gamer’ competes out of American Top Team, which is one of the most respected gyms in the sport
This was not the first time that Gamrot has called out Oliveira. Gamrot also called out the Brazilian after his own win against Fiziev. The 155lbs division has rarely lacked excitement, and the prospect of a showdown between Oliveira and Gamrot only adds to the intrigue. With just weeks left before the potential date, the situation underscores how quickly narratives can shift in mixed martial arts.
Fans react to Mateusz Gamrot’s challenge to Charles Oliveira
Whenever a matchup is hinted at between two top names in the lightweight division, it naturally stirs discussion among fight fans. The idea of Mateusz Gamrot stepping in against Charles Oliveira has quickly become a talking point, with supporters and skeptics weighing in on what the fight could mean.

Some fans see Gamrot’s willingness to step up on short notice as a bold move that adds excitement to the division. They point to his conditioning, grappling strength, and training environment as reasons why he might thrive, even without the benefit of a whole camp. Here are some fan reactions:
@THATBOYMMAGURU check Oliveira's latest interview (Laerte Viana) where he complains at fighters finding excuses not to fight him in Rio while refusing to fight Gamrot beacause "he has a different style than Fiziev". At the same time he's ready for BSD and Moicano.

Gamrot is a bad matchup for EVERYBODY .
If you’re a striker , he will take you down.
If you’re a grappler he will STILL take you down.
Also Gamrot striking is SUPER UNDERRATED .
Sorry, Gamrot, your style is tailor-made for Oliveira.

Others, however, view the potential clash with caution, highlighting Oliveira’s experience and finishing ability. From this perspective, the fight is not just about courage, but also about risk management. Taking on someone as dangerous as Oliveira without ideal preparation raises concerns. These contrasting reactions have fueled the debate, ensuring that talk around the matchup continues to build.
