Ligue 1 season opener postponed after three players of Marseille tested positive

Marseille reported on sunday that three member of their professional team tested positive, three days prior to the new campaign. They were set to play Saint Etienne for the 2020/21 curtain raiser on Friday night but now face dismay. It is said that the entire squad underwent tests on the day and the reports are made on Monday. The fixture is therefore postponed and will be scheduled next month.

The club delivered a message on the twitter which reads: “Following the tests carried out on Monday, no new cases of Covid-19 were revealed, but Sunday’s 3 suspected cases have been confirmed.” The individuals found Covid-19 positive are now stable and will go into quarantine immediately.

An official statement from the Ligue 1 executive was released, “In view of the medical test transmitted by Olympique de Marseille on Tuesday, August 18, the national Covid commission indicates to the LFP Competitions commission that the virus is circulating within the Marseille club and proposes the postponment of the match.”

The game is now rescheduled. It will take place either on Wednesday, September 16 or on the next day. However, it is subjected to clearance from the medical executives.

Despite other leagues around Europe resuming after the situation came little under control, they didn’t find it suitable to restart the campaign for safety.Last season of Ligue 1 was cancelled completely on April 30 with the French government reluctant to start the league after lockdown. Paris Saint German were handed their ninth league title with relegation scrapped and promotion halted.

However, the current campaign will go on as planned, starting off with Bordeaux facing Nantes on Saturday.
