A good cricketing team needs a leader who can show direction, groom youngsters, give advice whenever the need arises, and ensure a free flow of communication. It’s safe to say that MS Dhoni has all of these qualities and hence is the most successful Indian captain.

Many cricketers and ex-cricketers keep sharing anecdotes regarding the advice that Dhoni gave to them or to others which proved helpful in the years to come. Dhoni, in his interviews, has often said that as a captain, he needs to keep the doors open to ensure that other players, especially the youngsters do not hesitate while approaching him.

The 42-year-old, from behind the stumps is very alert, and his game awareness and observation have often helped him plot the dismissals of the opponent batters. His creativity, daring decisions, his ability to stay calm and composed under pressurized situations have garnered him praise from the cricket fraternity.

And though, some people will keep questioning how much he contributed as a batter, it’s difficult to point the finger at ‘Captain Cool’ for his contribution as a leader. Ignoring all the opinions, looking at his stats as a captain proves how he left no stone unturned while doing the duty of a leader.

ICC T20 World Cup in 2007

India faced arch-rivals Pakistan in the final of the 2007 ICC T20 World Cup at the New Wanderers Stadium in Johannesburg. MS Dhoni won the toss and decided to bat first. Gautam Gambhir top scored for India with a 54-ball 75 runs while Rohit Sharma contributed an unbeaten 30 runs off 16 balls to take India to a decent 157/5.

In response, though India were able to restrict a threatening Imran Nazir (33 off 14) from creating havoc, it was a tough challenge to stop a formidable Misbah-ul-Haq. Misbah started sending the ball across the boundary during the death overs but to the relief of the Indian side, a mistimed scoop shot by Misbah and a catch by Sreesanth off Joginder Sharma’s bowling ended his knock, and India won the match by five runs. This was the first time Dhoni laid hands on an ICC trophy.

ICC ODI World Cup in 2011

India and Sri Lanka co-hosted the ICC ODI World Cup in 2011 and they faced each other in the final at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai. While chasing 275 runs, Dhoni played a captain’s innings but before him, Gautam Gambhir and Virat Kohli’s partnership rescued Team India from a horrible start by openers Virender Sehwag (0) and Sachin Tendulkar (18). Dhoni had scored 91 runs off 79 balls including that glorious six, which saw India winning the match by six wickets.

ICC Champions Trophy in 2013

The Champions Trophy Final was played at Edgbaston in Birmingham between India and England. After winning the toss, English skipper Alastair Cook chose to field first. India posted a mere 129/7 on the back of Virat Kohli‘s 43 off 34, Ravindra Jadeja’s 33* off 25, and Shikhar Dhawan’s 31. India later restricted England to 124/8 to win the match by five wickets.

5 IPL trophies

MS Dhoni-led CSK to five IPL trophies- in 2010, 2011, 2018, 2021, and 2023. Their first trophy came in 2010 when they defeated Mumbai Indians (MI) by 22 runs.

Dhoni and Co. defended their title the next year when they hammered Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) by 58 runs in the final. After facing a ban for two years, CSK again made a comeback in 2018 only to lift the coveted cup for the third time by beating Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) by eight wickets. Then in 2021, they thrashed Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) by 27 runs and equaled their trophy tally with MI when they defeated Gujarat Titans in IPL 2023 final by five wickets.
