There are seven ATP players who have completed the Sunshine Double in the history of tennis. Players claim the Sunshine Double when they emerge triumphant in the two back-to-back ATP Masters 1000 events in the United States.
The Indian Wells, the first event of the Sunshine Doubles, started in 1974. It was held in different venues across the United States but finally, it was shifted to California in 1987. The tournament is now held at the Indian Wells Tennis Gardens.
The Miami Open, on the other hand, was played for the first time in 1985. It takes place at the Miami Gardens, in Florida.
The seven players who have completed the Sunshine Double are:
Player | Year |
Jim Courier | 1991 |
Michael Chang | 1992 |
Pete Sampras | 1994 |
Marcelo Rios | 1998 |
Andre Agassi | 2001 |
Roger Federer | 2005, 2006, 2017 |
Novak Djokovic | 2011, 2014, 2015, 2016 |
Only Federer and Djokovic have completed the feat multiple times. Djokovic, with four Sunshine Double, leads the list, followed by Federer who has achieved the feat three times.
Jim Courier (1991)
Jim Courier became the first man to win the two back-to-back ATP Masters 1000 events at Indian Wells and Miami in 1991. The four-time Grand Slam champion clinched the two titles just before winning his first Grand Slam title.

He beat Guy Forget 4-6, 6-3, 4-6, 6-3, 7-6(4) at Indian Wells and in Miami, David Wheaton was his opponent in the final. Courier beat Wheaton 4-6, 6-3, 6-4 to lift the title.
Michael Chang (1992)
Michael Chang is the youngest man to win a Grand Slam title. After clinching the 1989 French Open, Chang joined his compatriot Jim Courier to become the second man to complete the Sunshine Double.

At Indian Wells, Chang went past Andrei Chesnokov 6-3, 6-4, 7 in the final. In the Miami final, on the other hand, Chang came out on top of Alberto Mancini 7-5, 7-5.
Pete Sampras (1994)
Another American on the list is Pete Sampras. The 14-time Grand Slam champion won the 1993 Miami Open; and the following year, his attempt for the Sunshine Double was successful.

He got the better of Petr Korda 4-6, 6-3, 3-6, 6-3, 6-2 in the desert. Then in Miami, Sampras beat compatriot Andre Agassi 5-7, 6-3, 6-3 to complete the Sunshine Double.
Marcelo Rios (1998)
Marcelo Rios was the first non-American to take home the Indian Wells and the Miami Open the same year. Rios, who never lifted a Grand Slam title, went past Greg Rusedski 6-3, 6-7(15), 7-6(4), 6-4 in Tennis Paradise.

The five-time winner in ATP Masters 1000 events, Rios clinched a 7-5, 6-3, 6-4 win over Andre Agassi to claim the Sunshine Double. He is the only non-Grand Slam winner in the history of tennis- male and female- to have completed a Sunshine Double.
Andre Agassi (2001)
The fourth and the last American on the list is Andre Agassi. Agassi, after winning his seventh Grand Slam title at the 2001 Australian Open, finally added the two ATP Masters 1000 trophies he clinched in the States to his trophy cabinet.

Pete Sampras was his opponent in the Indian Wells final and he defeated his compatriot with a 7-6(5), 7-5 scoreline. Agassi then won his fourth Miami Open to complete the Sunshine Doubles after beating Jan-Michael Gambill 7-6(4), 6-1, 6-0 in the final.
Roger Federer (2005, 2006, and 2017)
Roger Federer bade his farewell to tennis at the 2022 Laver Cup after breaking and setting many records. The first ATP player to clinch 20 Grand Slam titles, Federer accomplished the Sunshine Double feat thrice.

He secured his first Sunshine Double in 2005 with a 6-2, 6-4, 6-4 win over Lleyton Hewitt at Indian Wells and 2-6, 6-7(4), 7-6(5), 6-3, 6-1 over Rafael Nadal at the Miami Open. The Swiss maestro then became the first ATP player to achieve the Sunshine Double twice by defeating James Blake 7-5, 6-3, 6-0 in the California desert.
His third back-to-back title in the States came in 2017. He went past compatriot Stan Wawrinka 6-4, 7-5 and Nadal 6-3, 6-4 at the Indian Wells and the Miami Open, respectively.
Novak Djokovic (2011, 2014, 2015, and 2016)
Novak Djokovic has reached the twilight of his career and would join Roger Federer on the retirement list, if not in the near future. Djokovic, the most successful ATP player with 24 Grand Slam titles, holds numerous other records.

One of them being the four Sunshine Doubles he has completed in his career, including three times on the trot. He emerged victorious in the two ATP Masters 1000 events in the United States for the first time in 2011 by beating Rafael Nadal with scores of 4-6, 6-3, 6-2 and 4-6, 6-3, 7-6(4) in both the finals, respectively.
Djokovic then beat Roger Federer 3-6, 6-3, 7-6(3) and Nadal 6-3, 6-3 to complete the feat in 2014. The following year, he beat Federer 6-3, 6-7(5), 6-2 in the desert and Andy Murray 7-6(3), 4-6, 6-0 in the second leg of the Sunshine Double.
He last achieved the feat in 2016. The Serb defeated Milos Raonic 6-2, 6-0 at Indian Wells and Kei Nishikori 6-3, 6-3 in Miami.
