It was a day of sheer madness at Green Park as Team India left Bangladesh reeling in a sheer vortex of entropy. From skittling out the visitors for a paltry 233 to piling up an insane show of fireworks, the hosts batted with intent and urgency. This was the fourth day of the game and after two days being called off due to rain and wet outfield, cricket finally resumed on Monday in Kanpur. Starting the day at 107/3, Bangladesh were quick to lose their footing.
Apart from the partnership between Mehidy Hasan Miraz (20) and Mominul Haque (107*), the others couldn’t really get the wheels rolling. In response to Bangladesh’s 233, the Indian openers, Rohit Sharma and Yashasvi Jaiswal knitted a burst of explosive brilliance, while the Bangladeshi bowlers were kept reeling in agony. India knitted together 55 runs from just 23 balls for the opening stand, while a follow-up with similar intensity from the rest of the batting line-up was equally stellar. During their first innings, the Indian batters floored a handful of records in Test cricket.
Here’s a quick glance at them:
- India scored the fastest hundred in the history of Test cricket racking up the feat within just 10.1 overs, bettering their own record against West Indies of 12.2 overs.
- India slammed the fastest fifty as well in the antiquity of Test cricket. They completed the feat in 3 overs, leapfrogging England’s 4.2 overs record against the West Indies earlier this year.
- This was the first time that India completed their fifty within 20 balls in any format whatsoever. Their fastest fifty across all incarnations of the game before this was from 3.4 overs which also came against Bangladesh in last year’s Asian Games.
- The fifty-run partnership for the opening stand between Rohit Sharma and Yashasvi Jaiswal is the fastest Test half-century stand in terms of the run rate, bettering that of Ben Duckett and Ben Stokes who scored 87 off 44 balls against West Indies in Birmingham at a rate of 11.86.
- India clobbered 96 sixes from the eight Test matches that they have played which is the highest number of maximums struck by a team in Test matches in the longest format of the game in a calendar year. The previous best was by England who blasted 89 sixes in 2022.
Apart from these records, there were a couple of personal milestones too which were breached on Monday. Virat Kohli became the fastest batter to score 27000 international runs, leapfrogging the Master Blaster, Sachin Tendulkar. Tendulkar’s long-standing record was from 623 innings, while Virat Kohli completed the feat from 594 innings. Alongside VK, Ravindra Jadeja also entered an elite club as he claimed 300 wickets in Test cricket with scalp of Khaled Ahmed.

After the day’s play, Ravindra Jadeja opened up to the broadcasters about his wonderful journey and how racking up 300 wickets felt to him. He also spoke at length about the Indian batters and how they proved equal to the herculean ask which was placed ahead of them.
At the end of the fourth day, Bangladesh could amass 26/2 while still trailing by 26 runs. India ended up winning the match by seven wickets and eventually the series 2-0.
