Veteran Indian cricketer Virat Kohli bounced back from a recent slump, to finish the three-match ODI series against Australia with a half-century in Sydney. The masterclass innings allowed Kohli to etch his name further into the history books, as he surpassed several career milestones.
The 36-year-old did not endure a good start against the Australians. Kohli made his much-anticipated return to the Indian ODI setup, after having last played for the Men in Blue in the 2025 Champions Trophy final victory over New Zealand. He also took fans by surprise earlier this year, after announcing his decision to call time on his illustrious red-ball career, retiring with 9,230 Test runs in 123 matches.
Virat Kohli’s return to the 50-over format however, was marred by a poor run of form. The veteran Indian batter was dismissed for consecutive ducks in the first two ODIs against Australia. Going into the third ODI, he was already under immense pressure to score big amid recent retirement buzz. Kohli did not disappoint, hitting a composed knock of 74 runs off 81 balls, to take the Indian team over the line.
More than just securing a consolation victory, Kohli’s performance, which included a 168-run second-wicket partnership with Rohit Sharma, saw the Men in Blue chase down a target of 237 runs to win by nine wickets. The match turned into a record-breaking spree for both batters.
Second-highest run-getter in ODIs
Upon reaching the 54-run mark, Virat Kohli became the all-time second highest run-getter in ODI cricket history. The 36-year-old veteran Indian batter surpassed Sri Lankan legend Kumar Sangakkara’s record of 14,234 runs in the 50-over format, to be ranked second, only behind countryman Sachin Tendulkar. Kohli is still way behind Tendulkar’s tally of 18,426 runs in 463 ODIs, at an average of 44.83.

Kohli now boasts an impressive 14,255 runs in 305 matches, having scored runs at an average of 57.71, which is the highest among batters who have scored over 5,000 runs in the format. Kohli has managed this remarkable tally with the help of 51 hundreds and 75 half-centuries, at a career strike-rate of 93.26.
Highest run-getter in limited-overs cricket
Kohli did surpass Sachin Tendulkar on another list, becoming the highest run-getter in white-ball cricket history. He went past Tendulkar’s tally of 18,436 runs combined in the two white-ball formats, ODIs and T20Is. He got to the milestone with a trademark flick against Australia’s Nathan Ellis off the last ball of the 37th over in Sydney, taking his individual score to 68 runs.
Virat Kohli now stands on top with 18,437 runs in both ODIs and T20Is combined, which includes a historic tally of 52 hundreds (51 in ODIs and one in T20Is) and 113 fifties (75 in ODIs and 38 in T20Is). Tendulkar on the other hand, accumulated most of his runs in the 50-over format, getting just ten runs in the only T20I that he played against South Africa in 2006.
Most 50+ scores in ODI run-chases
Kohli brought up his 75th ODI fifty in the third and final match against Australia in Sydney, going past Tendulkar’s record for the most 50+ scores by a batter while chasing in the format. He now has the most 50+ scores in the second innings in ODIs, with 70 of those to his name, edging past Tendulkar’s record of 69 such innings throughout his career.
First to 6,000 runs in successful ODI run-chases
The 36-year-old rounded up his record-breaking spree by also becoming the first batter in the world to cross the 6,000-run mark in successful run-chases in Men’s ODIs. He now stands tall with 6,072 runs, having batted exceptionally well at a career average of 89.29 while chasing. Apart from this, Virat Kohli also holds the record for the most centuries (24) in successful run-chases in ODIs.
