Jay Williams on Luka Doncic

Luka Doncic had fought a battle during the opener of the Western Conference Finals versus the Golden State Warriors. He and his team had one of their best seasons yet finished fourth in the division right behind their current opponents. The Mavs had a few adjustments made to their roster in between during the trade deadline letting go of Kristaps Porzingis for a few good role players.

However tough they may have seemed, the Warriors still snatched a victory 112-87 and the Mavs are slowly starting to feel the pressure. The Slovenia star had 20 points, 7 rebounds, and 4 assists which were very unusually coming from someone who averaged 30 points, 10 rebounds, and 5 assists during the playoffs. Golden State’s defense played a part in their defeat recording 8 steals and 7 blocks led by Andrew Wiggins and Draymond Green.

The Warriors maintained extremely tight defense throughout the playoffs and it has been a big factor contributing to their success lately. Head Coach of GSW, Steve Kerr returned to his duties after testing positive for COVID19 before Game 5 against the Grizzlies. He had some words for Wiggins who anchored the defense, he said, “I thought Wiggs was fantastic. Luka Doncic is as difficult a cover as there is in the league. It’s important to make him work.”

Mavericks Coach Jason Kidd also praised Maple Jordan saying, “They did a really good job. Wiggins picking him up full court. They went box-and-one, they went zone. We understood coming into the series that we were going to see that. We’ll go back and look at the video and see what we can do better.” It seems that both teams are locked in on countering each other during their next game.

So the Dubs held good chemistry and balanced out their players with Stephen Curry and Klay Thompson leading the offense. Steph had 21 points during the game but did not shoot too well. Despite these performances, the team held it together and brought down their target Luka Doncic.

Analyst Jay Williams believes that Dallas will make a comeback to win the entire series and qualify for the finals. “The game was so physical last night, that’s exactly how you need to play if your Golden State. If Luka is top five offensively, he’s gotta be bottom five defensively,” he said. Williams addressed how both teams’ weaknesses and strengths go hand in hand for this matchup. He also brought up the incident that had Luka injured on the face hilariously saying, “looked like Luka came out of a heavy-weight fight.”
