Italian teenage sensation, Lorenzo Musetti becomes youngest player to be ranked inside the top 100 in the ATP Rankings
Lorenzo Musetti
Lorenzo Musetti announced himself on the big stage last year after he reached the quarterfinals of the Italian Masters, where he defeated Stan Wawrinka. The Italian teenager has lived up to his hype this season, as he reached the semifinals of the Acapulco Open last week, losing to Stefanos Tsitsipas.
However, despite his semifinal loss, it was a miraculous week for the Italian, as he defeated the likes of the third seeded Argentine, Diego Schwartzman, Grigor Dimitrov and Frances Tiafoe all within on week. By virtue of his exploits last week, Musetti became the youngest player to be ranked inside the top 100 rankings.
Musetti climbed 26 spots from 120th place and is now ranked as the world number 94. “It’s a dream come true. Since I was a kid, I hoped and I dreamed to be one day Top 100 and to enter on the Tour,” Musetti said. “Finally, I got this. It is incredible,” he added.
Fellow Italian players impressed with Musetti’s recent form
Jannik Sinner, another Italian teenager to be ranked in the top 100 spoke highly of his fellow countryman, Lorenzo Musetti. Sinner believes that Musetti is a huge talent and is all-round player, with almost all shots up his sleeve.
“Musetti is a big, big talent,” Sinner said in Dubai last week. “He can do everything with the ball already, so he’s already physically strong. I think he’s a great player,” he added.
Paolo Lorenzi, Italian veteran tennis player who trains with younger players, believes that Musetti had made huge progress last year. “He made a really big step during the lockdown. I saw him playing before and after,” Lorenzi said. “I was practicing with him before qualifying in Rome and he was playing really unbelievable. It was really impressive. I think he made a big step during lockdown with his coach,” he added.
“Before he had good hands, but he was not so strong physically. Of course, he can do everything he was doing before, but the lockdown helped him a lot,” the Italian added.
Lorenzo Musetti will now compete in the main draw of the Miami Open 2021, which will be held this week. The teenager will hope to do well in the first Masters tournament of the year and push up his rankings even further.
