Lorenzo Musetti was projected to meet Jannik Sinner in the Shanghai Masters final. But even if Musetti reaches the final, he will not be facing his compatriot, given that Sinner withdrew from the tournament.

The World No.2 suffered from severe cramps while he was clashing with Tallon Griekspoor. In the third set, Sinner threw in the towel and limped off to his chair with the assistance of a physio. Sinner, however, is alright at present as Musetti, who met the four-time Grand Slam champion’s coach, Simone Vagnozzi, assured all that Sinner is not dealing with a serious injury problem. Musetti told Spazio Tennis:

I haven’t heard from Sinner after his withdrawal due to cramps. I saw Vagnozzi this morning at breakfast, and he didn’t seem worried at all. He told me that Jannik had already left; I guess we’ll see him at the Six King Slam, and then we’ll meet again at the ‘500’ in Vienna. The conditions in Shanghai are extreme: you have to be careful, stay hydrated, as in recent days the heat and humidity have affected the matches and led to many withdrawals.

Sinner was bidding to defend his title. He had defeated Novak Djokovic in the final last year. Last year in the Six Kings Slam, he beat Carlos Alcaraz in the final and pocketed the mouthwatering $6 million.

Musetti, who went past compatriot Luciano Darderi in the third round, will next be facing Felix Auger-Aliassime. The 2024 Paris Olympic bronze medalist hasn’t yet won a title since lifting the 2022 Tennis Napoli Cup. Since that win, he lost five consecutive finals, including this year’s Monte-Carlo Masters and Chengdu Open (to Alcaraz and Alejandro Tabilo, respectively).

Tallon Griekspoor recalls the lucky moment that helped him during his clash with Jannik Sinner

After Jannik Sinner‘s win in the first set, Tallon Griekspoor trailed 3-4 in the second set and was at 0-40. When Sinner committed an unforced error, it was a lucky moment for the Dutchman, who held his nerves and tried to stay alive in the match.

Yeah, like I said, especially that Love-40 on 4-3 where I served, I think two aces, and got lucky on one where he missed the ball. Yeah, just tried to stay in there, hang in there, do the best I can, and give myself a chance towards the end of the set. Then, out of nowhere, I broke him on 5-all, and it all went a little bit my way. So, yeah, pleased with my own performance, and looking forward to the next one.

Tallon Griekspoor said at the press conference

The 27th seed will next be locking horns with Valentin Vacherot. Griekspoor is chasing his career’s fourth title. This year, he has so far featured in two finals, winning the Mallorca Open by beating Corentin Moutet, and he lost the Grand Prix Hassan II to Luciano Darderi. He has yet to win a title in the ATP 500 or above category.

Because of his Shanghai Masters withdrawal, it’s nothing but tough for Sinner to reclaim his No.1 ranking from Carlos Alcaraz. The reigning Wimbledon champion at present has 10,000 points in the live rankings, losing 950 points after ending his Shanghai campaign. The six-time Grand Slam champion, with 11,340 points in the live rankings, has more than a 1000-point lead.

The 24-year-old will next be playing the Vienna Open, while Alcaraz, who skipped the Shanghai Masters because of an ankle injury, will participate in the Paris Masters. Sinner’s participation in the Paris Masters is uncertain. He skipped the tournament last year and has featured in the event only three times.
