Though the uproar around Jannik Sinner‘s doping saga has died down, the tennis community has not forgotten that the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) is yet to give its verdict following an appeal by the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA). Sinner’s compatriot Lorenzo Musetti opened up about the case in a recent interview.

Musetti was made aware that before Sinner, 38 athletes in different sports in Italy between 2019 and 2023 had tested positive for the same substance. The 22-year-old defended Italian tennis because only a few of the tennis players from his country tested positive for clostebol.

If there had been 38 cases of tennis players, it probably could have given the impression that there was something suspicious. But at our level, I know that only Jannik tested positive for this substance. So we must not take away all the good sides of Italian tennis because of this. There are a lot of controls and there is a lot of transparency in this sport. And I don’t want to think about anything else. I believe in the fight against doping.

As per the International Tennis Integrity Agency (ITIA), Sinner failed two drug tests in March this year but was proven innocent after the investigation conducted by an independent tribunal. The independent tribunal confirmed that clostebol accidentally entered Sinner’s body due to a spray used by his ex-physio Giacomo Naldi to heal a minor cut on his finger.

Sinner later announced his split from Naldi as well as Umberto Ferrera, his ex-fitness trainer who purchased the spray from Italy.
