Jannik Sinner overcame Carlos Alcaraz to claim his first Wimbledon title on Sunday (July 13). The Italian star became the first player from his country to win the prestigious title at the All England Club. Following his success, his fellow compatriot Lorenzo Sonego has heaped praises on the World No.1, stating that he’s the best player in the world currently.
Sinner had fallen to Alcaraz five consecutive times before their encounter at Wimbledon. The Italian star was also in the Wimbledon final for the first time in his career and had never won the title. Last month, he had also suffered the most devastating heartbreak of his career when he faced Alcaraz at the French Open final.
The 23-year-old was up two sets before Alcaraz rallied from behind to win the match in five sets after five hours and 29 minutes. Sinner didn’t get over the defeat on time, which led to him failing to defend the Terra Wortmann Open. He was knocked out of the tournament after eventual champion Alexander Bublik defeated him in three sets.
However, during the final against Alcaraz, he showed a brilliant mental strength as he came from a set down to beat the two-time defending champion. The victory extended his Grand Slam title tally to four and he has also won three of the last major tournaments on tour, including the 2024 US Open and 2025 Australian Open.
During an interview with Italian outlet Tuttosport, Lorenzo Sonego praised Sinner for his outstanding performance at the Wimbledon final. The Italian star added that Sinner wasted no time in seeking his revenge after Roland Garros final loss:
It was a great moment for all of us Italians, and obviously for me. We’ve trained together often this season, and we’ve even played doubles several times throughout our careers. I knew Jannik was desperate to bounce back after his incredible defeat at Roland Garros, and he wasted no time. He confirmed he’s the best player in the world, especially mentally. Jannik delivered a great performance from every perspective.
Sinner had a difficult start to the season because he was suspended for three months for testing positive for clostebol in March last year. He returned to the court at the Italian Open and quickly adjusted to the level of the men’s circuit, reaching the final of the tournament before going on to finish as runners-up at the French Open.
Lorenzo Sonego says Jannik Sinner has given Italian tennis a boost to do well
Jannik Sinner has been the leading figure in Italy’s rise in professional tennis. Even though the likes of Lorenzo Musetti, Flavio Cobolli, Matteo Berrettini and Lorenzo Sonego have shown they compete with top players in the circuit, Sinner remains the only player to have dominated the ATP Tour, winning Grand Slam titles.

During the aforementioned interview, Sonego revealed that Sinner showed his fighting spirit by coming from a set down against Carlos Alcaraz at the Wimbledon Championships final. He added that Sinner now gives the entire Italian tennis team an incentive to do well:
He was very good at coming back after losing the first set and capitalising, despite fighting, on the break he gained at the start of the second set. He gradually took away the confidence of the two-time Wimbledon champion and went on to deservedly take the title…It will be a further incentive for all of us and the entire Italian tennis movement to always do better.
Sinner will now take a break from the court after his Wimbledon victory. He’s set to open his North American hard-court swing at the Canadian Open, which kicks off on July 26 in Montreal.
