Towns opened up on his mother’s death due to the COVID-19. In March 2020, Cruz-Towns received a COVID-19 diagnosis and was put into a medically induced coma. Aged 58, she passed away after 19 days, on April 13. Towns also lost six other family members, including his grandmother, to COVID-19.

My mom was the first person that showed me love, and it’s the longest relationship I’ve ever had, so imagine losing the longest relationship you’ve ever had. … The relationship you always knew was going to be solid, you never had to worry about that. All of a sudden, it’s gone.

Karl-Anthony Towns ‘lost his soul’ after his mother’s death

Karl Anthony Towns has not been the same person since his mother passed away due to COVID-19 on April 13, 2020. Additionally, he was also diagnosed with the disease and missed many important games for his former side, the Minnesota Timberwolves, in 2020.

After returning to action, Towns provided a heart-breaking assessment to the media, stating that he lost all the joy in his life after his mother passed away.

I only know what happened from April 13 on. Because you may see me smiling and stuff, but that Karl died on April 13. He’s never coming back. I don’t remember that man. I don’t know that man. You’re talking to the physical me, but my soul has been killed off a long time ago.
