The New York Yankees had another defensive error against the Toronto Blue Jays. In the series opener on Friday, Luis Garcia Jr. made a mistake in the infield in the 6th inning, which proved costly. Fans on social media were left furious with this play.
In the matchup against their division rivals, the Yankees had Gerrit Cole on their mound. This was his first start against them since August 4, 2024.
The right handed pitcher was in control for most part of the games. In the top of the 6th inning, he got a lead to protect as Trent Grisham smashed a solo home run. It was the bottom of this frame where the team had another sloppy display of defense against the Blue Jays.
After singles from Brett Bateman and Vladimir Guerrero Jr., George Springer came up to bat with one out. Cole forced the former Houston Astros star to hit a ground ball towards Ryan McMahon at 3rd base.
The 3rd baseman fielded the ball, stepped on the plate for the 2nd out and tried to turn the play into an inning-ending double play by throwing the ball towards 1st base. However, his relay to newly acquired star Luis Garcia Jr. came with one bounce.
The 1st baseman was unable to scoop the ball and it bounced off his glove. He then lost his glove during the play. The 26-year-old then picked up the ball with his bare hand and threw it back at 3rd base and attempted to tag out Guerrero Jr. and end the inning.
Unfortunately for him and the Yankees, nobody was at 3rd base. While George Lombard Jr. tried to field the ball, he was unable to make it and had a collison with the Blue Jays star. Guerrero Jr. then got up and hustled towards home plate to score the run and tie the game.

Alejandro Kirk then hit a double and put the Blue Jays 2-1 up. After striking out Andres Gimenez, Cole’s day came to an end. The former Cy Young Award winner ended his day with 6 innings, 2 runs (1 earned) and 5 strikeouts in 87 pitches.
Kirk went on to hit a solo home run against Bradley Hanner in the 8th inning and put his team 3-1 up. The Yankees offense was unable to come up with any answer and lost the series opener in Toronto.

Has there been a fundamentally well-coached team since Boone has been here? Seems to me the answer is no.

God that meme of starting pitching, bullpen, and offense, unable to be on all at the same time is so true.

The Yankees made several errors against the Blue Jays during the regular season last year. In their 8-4 loss last July, the Yanks made 4 errors in a single game, leading to captain Aaron Judge admitted that they did not well play.
Aaron Boone claimed Luis Garcia Jr. got a bit aggressive during the defensive error
Luis Garcia Jr.’s errand throw towards 3rd base after failing to scoop a throw to him at 1st led to the Toronto Blue Jays tying the game at 1-1. This play cost his team as the hosts went on to win 3-1. Following the game, Yankees manager Aaron Boone claimed that the first baseman got a bit aggressive.

During the post-game conference, Boone stated that Garcia Jr. should have held on to the ball instead of trying to pick out Guerrero Jr. at third base.
I think [Garcia] just got overly aggressive with throwing to third there, especially with a two-out situation. But when his back got to the play, when he turned around and got his sightline again … he obviously should have held it.

Speaking of Boone, he was thrown out of the game in the top of the 6th inning. After he argued with home plate umpire Vic Carapazza, he was ejected. This was his 50th ejection in the MLB.

While the throw from Garcia Jr. eventually opened up the doors for a Blue Jays comeback, the Yankees offense also went cold. They managed just 5 hits in the entire game.
One positive for them was the Tampa Bay Rays losing. With their 6-5 loss against the Baltimore Orioles, the gap between the two teams in the AL East standings is now 6.5 games.
