“We’re the two leaders of the team!” Luka Doncic gets real about guiding Mavericks side with help of Kyrie Irving
Luka Doncic and Kyrie Irving could rewrite history if they beat the Boston Celtics in the NBA Finals.
Luka Doncic is looking to guide the Mavs to glory with Kyrie Irving
When the Dallas Mavericks struggled in the 1st 3 games of the NBA Finals, the most telling point was that they lacked leadership. Leadership that could help them focus on the task at hand and not get demotivated or carried away. But in Game 4, the leadership showed. Luka Doncic and Kyrie Irving are the two biggest stars on the team. Their roles helped them get another chance against the Boston Celtics.
Sports Illustrated reporter Grant Afseth asked the Slovenian superstar about that leadership. Something that has been the driving factor for the team all through the playoffs. In response, Doncic admitted that supporting each other has been key for them.
Yeah, I think it's me and Kai. We're the two leaders of the team. No matter what, they made a run and we stayed together, especially in the fourth quarter at home. Which is very difficult to stay together. But we did. Everybody talked, everybody was supporting each other, and that's what we need to do.Luka Doncic said
Doncic was clear that it was the combined efforts of both him and Kyrie Irving that has helped the Dallas Mavericks to this point. Their leadership has transformed the team.
What made it more evident was that their energy and desire was constant throughout the game. Unlike in other games where teams tend to lose focus and allow the opponent to stage a rally, this time it did not happen. The Dallas Mavericks kept their foot on the gas from start to finish.
The constant communication between the two leaders and the rest of the team ensured they all were bought in. This was the first time in the NBA Finals that everyone on the Mavericks performed at a high level—something that was a staple of the way the Dallas Mavericks played basketball.
Luka Doncic and Kyrie Irving have a chance to create history
Up until the first half of Game 3, the Dallas Mavericks looked lost. The Boston Celtics were controlling the game with ease and eventually ended up winning the first three ties. With the NBA Finals heavily favoring the Celtics, it seemed all but over for Luka Doncic and his teammates.
However, that second half of Game 3 gave the basketball world a glimpse into what could be if the team focused on the job. The Mavs had found something which worked in their favor. They went on the attack from the first whistle of Game 4 with that knowledge in hand and did not stop. With the blowout win, they showed the basketball world that they could potentially rewrite history.
Suddenly, the league’s best team by far, looked vulnerable. Luka Doncic and Kyrie Irving and the Mavericks unlocked something. If they can implement that in the rest of the games, they will have their names etched in gold.
