Luka Doncic and Kyrie Irving

Luka Doncic surely left the Dallas Mavericks a few weeks ago but he has not seem to forgotten the bond he created with his former teammates. Doncic made his Los Angeles Lakers debut against the Utah Jazz on Monday at the Crypto.com Arena. Notably, Doncic’s former teammate, Kyrie Irving was included in the NBA All-Star Reserve lineup.

The 25-year-old Doncic congratulated Irving on being selected as Anthony Davis‘ replacement on Team Shaq in the 2025 NBA All-Star Game in an emotional note delivered to the Mavs guard after his Lakers debut on Monday night against the Utah Jazz. “Well deserved mi hermano!” For his shared Instagram Stories post, Doncic wrote. This left the NBA community quite emotional as they put forward their views on social media.

Doncic and Irving spent portions of three seasons playing together for the Mavericks. They led the Mavericks to a Western Conference championship last season. It was their first (and only) full season together in Dallas. Not only that, they nearly missed the ultimate goal when they were defeated by Jaylen Brown and the Boston Celtics in the 2024 NBA Finals.

In contrast, Irving finished the game against the Kings with 30 points, 9 rebounds, and 7 rebounds. When the Mavericks play the Lakers at Crypto.com Arena in Los Angeles on February 25, the old teammates will face each other.

Luka Doncic made his intentions clear regarding his Lakers debut on Monday

The Luka Doncic era officially started on Monday for the Los Angeles Lakers. He was engaged in the first match since Christmas Day because of a calf injury, so he wasn’t exactly at his best. Notably, Doncic described his debut as “special” and gave his teammates props for their performance before the game.

Very connected on both ends of the floor – I just thought … I want to play with them.

Luka Doncic said

Doncic is on a minutes limitation, according to head coach JJ Redick. Thus it appears that he will be added to the starting lineup gradually. The Lakers are currently in fourth place. This is the Western Conference with a 32-19 record. They have won 12 of their past 14 games and six straight. It is almost alarming to consider how good they will be with Doncic in the lineup. This is particularly in offense, once he is fully incorporated.
