Few names in the world of Chess carry as much weight as Magnus Carlsen. The five-time World Rapid Chess Champion is a class apart but his recent conduct at the World Rapid & Blitz Chess Championships in New York was deemed ‘classless’ by FIDE.
The governing body penalized Magnus Carlsen most severely. After he showed up to the contest wearing a shirt with a blazer on top, and a pair of jeans, the organizers were taken aback. Initially, he was fined a USD 200 fine and asked him to change into a different attire, one that was compliant with the dress code but he did not oblige.
This led to his disqualification from the contest in Round 9. Carlsen was least bothered by this move.
His justification was that he was fined and then warned about his attire. He requested an exemption from the prescribed code for a day, but the officials were adamant, and he could no longer keep his cool.
Magnus Carlsen did not violate the dress code on purpose
The top-ranked player in all of Chess claimed that he made an honest mistake. Carlsen was not happy with the federation forcing his hand which is why he revolted.
The 34-year-old has no intention of appealing this decision. His next step? Forget about the World Blitz Championship and the fine by taking a nice vacation.
Day 1 of the World Rapid & Blitz Championship was not all smooth sailing for Carlsen. He lost in one round and managed to draw in two other games.

After his dismissal from the tournament, Carlsen trolled FIDE by posting a picture of him in the outfit which was deemed violative of the organization’s code. It is safe to say that his response went viral as fans began to call out the competition over its rules and their relevance.
