Maja Chwalinska is just one win away from a fairytale ending at Roland Garros. On Thursday (June 4), the Pole clinched a 7-6(4), 6-4 win over Diana Shnaider in the semifinals to book a spot in the final of a Grand Slam tournament for the first time in her career.
Chwalinska, before this tournament, had played main draw events of just two Grand Slams but never once at the French Open. She made three appearances in the qualifying rounds, including last year.
And who should be given the credit for her stunning run? Maybe her very superstitious team. Because even at the expense of gaining weight, they are stuffing themselves with pizza every day.
I’m not a very superstitious person, but my coaches are. They eat pizza every day, like every day. And we’re here for three weeks, so you’re gonna gain so much weight, you guys. It’s going to be terrible. But if I want to, I can’t say no.
Maja Chwalinska said at the press conference
In the final, Chwalinska will face Mirra Andreeva, who ended Marta Kostyuk‘s 17-match winning streak with a 1–6, 3–6 scoreline in the semifinals. The 19-year-old will also be playing in her career’s first Grand Slam final.
Before this tournament, she had made the semifinal of a Major just once (2024 French Open) and also played two more quarterfinals (2025 French Open and 2025 Wimbledon). Andreeva will also be playing in her fourth final of the season, after her win at the Adelaide International and the Linz Open and her defeat at the Madrid Open.
Maja Chwalinska expresses admiration for the Big 3, Carlos Alcaraz, and Jannik Sinner
At the press conference after her semifinal win, Maja Chwalinska spoke in admiration of Novak Djokovic, Rafael Nadal, and Roger Federer. She also loves watching Jannik Sinner and Carlos Alcaraz, who have dominated in the Majors since the 2024 Australian Open until this year’s Australian Open.

I was Roger’s number one fan. When I started playing tennis, everything revolved around Roger. And then Rafa and then Novak. I just pray that Novak keeps playing so that I can watch him play. I am very grateful to have grown up in this era, you know?
Alcaraz chose not to defend his title in the clay-court Major due to a wrist injury. Sinner also failed to complete the Career Grand Slam as Juan Manuel Cerundolo beat him in the second round. Before arriving in the French capital, the four-time Major champion won the first five Masters 1000s of the season.
Sometimes I go back to watch those old matches, and it’s like poetry, really. Nowadays, it’s more about watching my friends. Sometimes, if there’s a good match, I can watch it. I love watching Carlos or Jannik, but before, it was definitely about the ‘Big Three’.
Maja Chwalinska added
For the first time since the 2022 French Open, Djokovic, Sinner, or Alcaraz won’t be crowned as Grand Slam champions. The Serb, who lost to Alcaraz in this year’s Australian Open final, suffered a five-set defeat at the hands of Joao Fonseca in the third round of the ongoing event.
Alcaraz will also be skipping Wimbledon, where he played in the final in the previous three seasons (beat Djokovic in 2023 and 2024 and lost to Sinner last year).
The semifinalists, Matteo Arnaldi, Flavio Cobolli, Jakub Mensik, and Alexander Zverev, have never tasted success in Majors. Sascha is the only player who has featured in a Major final and also finished as the runner-up at the 2024 French Open (lost to Alcaraz). Cobolli will face his compatriot Arnaldi, while Zverev will meet Mensik, who knocked out Fonseca.
