Manchester United among other clubs vying to sign Dayot Upamecano
Dayot Upamecano in action for RB Leipzig

Dayot Upamecano is a hot prospect right now in Europe and many clubs in Europe are eager to sign him. He had a brilliant season for RB Leipzig in last season’s Champions League and that put him on the radar. Tall and muscular, he is the central figure in Leipzig’s defence and is also key in starting attacks.

Reasons to sign him

The most interesting thing about this transfer is he has a release clause a little over 38 million dollars. Signing a young and proven prospect is a bargain for any team in the world. Liverpool, Barcelona and Manchester United are front runners for his signature while the latter will be most eager to sign him.

Liverpool will look to sign him because of their defensive injuries crisis. Barcelona will look to sign him as Gerard Pique is getting old and Samuel Umtiti is injury prone. Manchester United will hope to sign him to partner Harry Maguire. All of them have strong reasons and it all comes down to the matter of who will activate the release clause first.

It is however rumoured that Liverpool is concentrating more on Ibrahim Konate than Dayot Upamecano. Both of them are the centre-back pairing in RB Leipzig and Liverpool seems to prefer the former. It is also rumoured that they are looking at David Alaba, who is a free agent next summer and will look to get this deal done efficiently.

It is assumed that Barcelona and Manchester United will be the ones battling for his signature as both teams are in a state of rebuild. However both teams are in huge debt and their financial constraints have to be kept in mind.

One thing is for sure, Manchester United is not one shy to pay a lot of fees for transfers and is most likely to be able to sign him in the summer. Losing interest over him after a disastrous performance by RB Leipzig is a huge mistake. In 2018 Liverpool went on to buy Alisson Becker, despite conceding seven goals against them when Liverpool played against Roma. Now Alisson is one of the world’s best goalkeepers, if not the best. Manchester United will be looking to not make the same mistake.
