Kean Bryan scored the first goal for Sheffield

Manchester United suffered a shock 2-1 defeat against bottom placed Sheffield United. United had the chance to leapfrog City to the top of the table with a win in this match.

Goals from Kean Bryan and Oliver Burke helped Sheffield get their second win of the league campaign. Both were first time scorers in the Premier league and drowned United at Old Trafford.

United saw most of the possession in the first half but looked bereft of ideas in the attacking third. Kean Bryan gave the bottom placed Sheffield a shock lead in the 23rd minute against the run of play.

United pulled a goal back despite Sheffield’s heroic defending. Harry Maguire headed home from a corner in the 64th minute to restore parity at Old Trafford. Sheffield played their natural game and did not allow United to run away with the match. They got rewarded in the 74th minute when Oliver Burke’s shot took a vicious deflection off Tuanzebe and slid into the net.

Solskjaer was disappointed with the result and accused his attacking players of missing that zing in attack.

Matic dejected as Sheffield players celebrate

“We had all the possession but when you concede two bad goals it’s always going to be difficult. We didn’t create big enough chances to score enough goals.

“That magic was missing, that little bit extra. They defended well, fair play to them but we didn’t have the right ideas or solutions.

“It wasn’t to be, the second goal we conceded is so poor, so sloppy. Easy. We stopped getting out to the ball, three or four bad decisions which is out of character.

Manchester United were on a 13 match winning run in the league before this defeat against Sheffield. The result leaves them on 40 points — one point behind City- but Guardiola’s side have a game in hand. United will have to win these matches against lesser opposition if they are to challenge for the title this season.
