Manish Kaushik clinches gold at Boxam International; India end with 10 medals

Manish Kaushik clinched India’s only gold medal at the Boxam International Tournament in Castellon, Spain. Making his return to competitive action after a period of nearly a year, Kaushik came up with a strong showing and defeated Dane boxer Nikolai Terteryan in a split decision victory in the men’s 63 kg category. His win was a welcome return to the ring for a boxer who is clearly destined for more success.
Meanwhile, Vikas Krishan made his way to the final but lost against Ndiaye Sissokho and settled for a silver medal. Meanwhile, a COVID-19 outbreak among the Indian camp led to three Indians who had qualified for the final to withdraw before it. Ashish Kumar tested positive for the virus and hence, his roommates Mohammed Hussamuddin and Sumil Sangwan had to withdraw as well. Satish Kumar withdrew due to ‘sickness’ as well and settled for a silver.
India win six silver medals

In the women’s category Simranjit Kaur clinched a silver medal in the 60 kg category. Similarly, Asian games champion Pooja Rani came up with a strong showing but faltered in the final against American Naomi Graham to finish 2nd. Jasmine who was playing in her first ever senior tournament also won a silver with an impressive outing showing that he will be one to watch out for in the future.
14 boxers had travelled to the tournament including 8 men and 6 women. 10 of the 14 ended up with medals. The contingent will now travel as one and reach India on Monday.
