SC East Bengal have announced that they have mutually decided to end Robbie Fowler’s head coach contract and that he would be succeeded by Spanish coach Manuel Diaz.

Diaz was acquired just moments after East Bengal let go of Fowler. Fowler led them to a ninth-place finish in the Indian Super League (ISL) 2020, with only three wins during the season.

The club released a statement about the exit of Fowler. His contract was originally about to end next year but a mutual decision between both parties saw him part ways with the Kolkata-based club.

East Bengal thanked the Liverpool legend for his services and wished him luck for his future endeavors.

“SC East Bengal can confirm that the club has agreed with Robbie Fowler to a mutual termination of the head coach’s contract. Alongside his assistant Tony Grant, he took charge of the team in a very challenging period of transition and managed to overcome significant odds to bring the fans some moments of joy in the club’s first-ever season in the Indian Super League.”

“Everyone at SC East Bengal would like to wish him all the best with his future endeavors and look forward to his continued association with Shree Cement Limited,” read the club’s statement.

The addition of Diaz as the head coach will be a huge boost for East Bengal. The Spaniard will try to better the club’s ninth-placed finish last season and will exploit his experience to good use.

He offers a lot of expertise and a winning mindset to the table with over 20 years of coaching experience, including a considerable stretch of time in the Real Madrid C.F. system. In his two-decade coaching career, Diaz has an overall victory percentage of 41.77 percent, with a 46.66 win rate in his most recent spell at Real Madrid Castilla (2018-19).

“In Madrid, we say ‘Winning is in our DNA’. We love the pressure and expectation that comes with coaching a big club. Time is short and there is a long and difficult road ahead, but we will do our best to deliver good performances for all SC East Bengal fans,” said Diaz.
