Hecklers got under the nerves of Marco Trungelliti when he was competing against Daniel Merida Aguilar in the first round of the Madrid Open on Thursday (April 23). Trungelliti lost the match with a 6-4, 1-6, 7-6(6) scoreline.
Trungelliti complained to the chair umpire as well as the supervisor, but as the hecklers continued to yell at him, the Argentine decided to take the matter into his hands. He first stood in front of the stands and gave them a cold stare before he asked them to come down.

Trungelliti entered the Madrid Open as a qualifier. It was, in fact, the first time the 36-year-old qualified for the main draw of a Masters 1000 tournament. Before this year, he had played the qualifying round at this level eight times but had failed to progress to the main draw.
In the ongoing event, before scheduling his match against Aguilar, Trungelliti went past Borna Gojo and lost to Aguilar in the qualifying round. Before arriving in Madrid, Trungelliti lost to Hamad Medjedovic in the round of 32 of the Barcelona Open.
Trungelliti has never lifted a singles title. But he has played one final, in this year’s Grand Prix Hassan II, an ATP 250 clay-court tournament. He lost the title to Rafael Jodar. In Grand Slam events, he has never progressed beyond the second round. He has yet to play a main draw match in a Major since the 2022 Australian Open. The only title he has lifted this season is the Kigali Challenger by defeating Marco Cecchinato.
Daniel Merida Aguilar scheduled his match against Corentin Moutet after knocking out Marco Trungelliti
Daniel Merida Aguilar, before beating Marco Trungelliti in the qualifiers of the Madrid Open, eliminated Billy Harris. He will next be locking horns with Corentin Moutet. The 26th seed will kick-start his campaign against the Spaniard.

Moutet, who suffered opening-round exits in the previous three Madrid Opens, will be playing in the second round of the tournament for the first time. Moutet produced his best performance in a Masters 1000 tournament when he reached the fourth round of the Italian Open last year by defeating Jack Draper.
The Frenchman has yet to win a singles title but has so far played three finals. He reached the title clashes of the 2020 Qatar Open, 2025 Mallorca Championships, and the 2025 Almaty Open, losing to Andrey Rublev, Tallon Griekspoor, and Daniil Medvedev, respectively. In Grand Slam events, Moutet has made the fourth round just once, at the 2024 French Open.
The winner of the Moutet versus Aguilar will face Alexander Bublik or Stefanos Tsitsipas in the third round. The Greek ace is trying to rediscover his lost form and will be hoping to make a deep run this season.
The only time he reached a quarterfinal this year was at the Qatar Open, losing the match to Rublev. Tsitsipas registered a win after two opening-round exits at the Monte-Carlo Masters and the Munich Open.
Once a World No.3 player, the 27-year-old now stands in the 80th spot. In Madrid, the two-time Grand Slam finalist is a one-time finalist, reaching the stage in 2019 and losing the match to Novak Djokovic.
Bublik, on the other hand, has already lifted one title this year. He beat Lorenzo Musetti in the final of the Hong Kong Open. Last year, he played four finals, winning all, including the ATP 500 Halle Open.
In Madrid, the Kazakh ace has never progressed beyond the second round, reaching that stage in 2021. Tsitsipas holds a 2-0 head-to-head lead over Bublik, who has so far reached one semifinal in a Masters 1000 event (at the 2024 Italian Open).
