The Memphis Grizzlies Marcus Smart has been making headlines after his appearance on the “Run Your Race” podcast with Theo Pinson. Notably, Smart has been one of the stellar defenders in the NBA over the years, despite the past 2023-24 season not being that great for him. However, on the podcast, Smart shared a tragic story that formed an important turning point in his life, pushing him to mature swiftly.

Smart spoke about a heartbreaking moment when his older sibling was certified brain-dead. His mother decided to end life support, recognizing that his older brother had struggled long enough. Smart vividly recalled the sad sight at the hospital and claimed that it was his other two brothers who consoled him and pushed him to grow quickly in life as he was the last hope of the family.

When my oldest brother died, my other two brothers pulled me to the side...The doctor told my mom, 'His heart's still pumping, he's brain dead...I touch his feet, he's cold'...I walk out of the room, I'm crying, and my oldest brother grabs me. He was like, 'What you crying for? Wipe your tears.'... And he kept it real. He said, 'I f***ed up. My other brother f***ed up...And if you don't make it, then what we doing?' So all that time to be a kid, that shit's dead. You're no longer a kid.
On the Run Your Race Podcast, Marcus Smart said

Smart’s narrative is a painful reminder of how emotional sorrow and responsibility can shape a person’s destiny, propelling them to success despite the odds. On the contrary, Smart hopes to succeed with the Grizzlies in the upcoming 2024-25 NBA season, with many of their star players, like Ja Morant and Desmond Bane returning from injury.

Marcus Smart pays respect to his former side, the Celtics winning 2024 NBA title

The Boston Celtics won the 2024 NBA title against the Dallas Mavericks in a thrilling 7-game series. Interestingly, their former player Marcus Smart who spent 9 years with the Celtics congratulated his former side on the Run Your Race Podcast. Smart also paid respects to his former teammates Jayson Tatum and Jaylen Brown.

Shout out to Jaylen [Brown], Jayson [Tatum] and the Boston Celtics. Congratulations on the championship... I know everybody is expecting me to be salty and sh*t... I was screaming for those guys when they won it.

In addition, Smart also claimed that it hurt not being a part of the squad that won the NBA title.

On the other hand, Smart and his current side, the Memphis Grizzlies underperformed in the 2023-24 NBA season. Smart in particular was not at his flying best and did not perform the way he usually did for his former side in the NBA. It will be intriguing to watch how Smart and Co. provide a fitting comeback in the WCF of the upcoming 2024-25 NBA season.
