One of the major points of contention in the NASCAR at the moment is the future of the All-Star race, that has lost all of its charm. The 2026 event at Dover was clearly underwhelming despite the fact that Denny Hamlin produced a solid performance on the way to the win. There have been some key figures, including Dale Eranhardt Jr., that claimed it time to scrap the event.
Speedway Motorsports’ Marcus Smith, one of the key figures of the sport, has shared his thoughts on these claims in the recent appearance on the Dale Jr. Download podcast. He finds it wild that there is so much negativity against the race that was one of his favorite events growing up and admitted that many likes him look forward to the exhibition race every year.
It’s so wild to me how we’ve gotten to this place where the All-Star Race seems like a negative for so many people. And for me, it was my favorite race growing up. It was the race that made me, my own kind of decision, that I’m a NASCAR fan now. In ‘92, one hot night, I mean, that was the race. And every year, I look forward to it. And look at everything that’s come out of the All-Star Race.
Marcus Smith said on Dale Jr.’s podcast.
Further talking in the podcast that featured Jeff Burton, Dale Earnhardt Jr. and Matt Weaver, the key NASCAR figure asserted that over the years the All-Star race has been the something the sport used to showcase bold ideas and it should’ve remained like that. But unfortunately, nowadays it has become a punching bag.
Yeah, but I think the All-Star Race has done so many great things for the sport and created these opportunities to showcase bold ideas. And now it’s every weekend. Somewhere, it became kind of a punching bag.

The host of the podcast, Junior responded the comments made by Marcus Smith and others about the race. He highlighted how iconic venues like the Dover Monster Mile deserves a point paying race instead of the exhibition race. This shows how much the value of the All-Star race has dropped in the mind of Dale Jr. and many others in the sport.
And Dover, to me, deserves a points race. I don’t even know what that’s all about, why I feel like tracks deserve points races or deserve anything. But it deserves to be on the schedule.
Dale Earnhardt Jr. asserted.
Dale Earnhardt Jr. praises NASCAR new rule changes
In the same podcast, the Hall of Famer Dale Jr. talked about NASCAR rule change over stage breaks. According to the new rules if a natural caution occurs within ten laps of the scheduled break, it will be considered a stage break unlike in the past.

Junior sees this as the positive sign of the good days ahead. The two times second division champion pointed out that the sport will make more rules changes ahead of the 2027 season that would make the cautions end faster by making it more efficient.
They are still working on how they can shorten up standard traditional cautions. So, we’re not done. And I’m sure there’s going to be some things that have come in the many, many months down the road leading into next season where we’ll get better at trying to speed up that process.
Dale Earnhardt Jr. said.
The comments from the JR Motorsports co-owner seems too rational and a hint at positive changes the fans have been seeking for years. It would be interesting to see how everything is going playout regarding new rules in the coming races.
