The 2025 was a dramatic year for NASCAR, with the whole community being more vocal than ever about the faults within the sport alongside the 23XI-FRM charter lawsuit chaos. Hall of Famer Mark Martin was one of those voices, as he demanded changes to the playoffs format and an action plan to bring the fans back.

Recently on his appearance on the Racers Unchained with Paul Tracy podcast, Mark Martin talked about how NASCAR has alienated their core fanbase with questionable policy changes over the years. He highlighted how in the effort attract a new set of fans, the sport forgot about the passionate old demographic of fans that is keeping the ratings alive.

They have alienated all the core fans, a lot of the core fans, not all, a lot of them to try to get these new fans cuz the old people are going to die one day, which is dumb. That’s so dumb because they’re the ones that watch the pre-race show, the race, and the post-race show.

He then shifted his focuses to the playoffs format and highlighted how it is wrong even call it a playoff format. It should have been race-off to get that name, not the rounds the sports currently have. The veteran asserted that the format was adopted for the broadcaster who only thinks things through a ball sport perspective.

The people that they’re trying to get to watch these playoffs, which you know they ain’t nobody playing out there. It’s not a playoff. They should be a race off or whatever. This don’t call it a playoff. It’s not a playoff. They want it to the broadcasters want it to be the same as a ball sport because they know and understand a ball sports.

Mark Martin added.

Further talking about the point, he highlighted how the net set of fans the sport is looking to attract isn’t as reliable as the core bas, considering they will stop watching the series as soon as it stops giving the sparks in the post-season that made them watch it in the first place. He branded the new fans the sport gained as not real fans neither racing fans.

But at the end of the day, those fans that they’re trying to attract with all these sparks and the, you know, all this crazy stuff that’s going on, they could take it or leave it. And if there isn’t Sparks, they’re not going to watch. And so, they’ve lost all these, they’ve lost a lot of core fans. And a lot of the fans they picked up are not real fans. Not racing, not racing fans.

Mark Martin asserted.

Mark Martin slams current NASCAR leadership

In the same conversation the veteran talked about the sport leadership and highlighted how they leaders aren’t as strong as used to. NASCAR had a big name at the helm in Bill France Jr. in the peak years of the premier division. Now it’s the committees and focus groups dictating the decisions, which isn’t good for the sport according to the veteran.

It always turned out that he was right and I was wrong. The guy was brilliant. He brought the sport to where it was amazing and I only wish that we had that kind of leadership now instead of committees and focus groups and advertising agencies doing these freaking studies.

Mark Martin said.

The comments from the Hall of Famer seems rational as the sport needs a better leadership from the likes of Jim France and Steve Phelps. It would be interesting to see how the officials are going to respond to the comments from the veteran and how the leadership is going to evolve in the coming years.
