In total, Carlos Alcaraz dropped six sets en route to winning his French Open title. Emma Raducanu‘s coach Mark Petchey, however, is not concerned about this.

Alcaraz lost the second set during his second-round match against an unseeded Fabian Marozsan, then lost back-to-back sets when he was up against an unseeded Damir Dzumhur in the third round and while playing against 13th seed Ben Shelton in the fourth round.

In the semifinal, he received a walkover from Lorenzo Musetti but before that, he lost the first set. Against Jannik Sinner in the final then, he lost the first two sets before making one of the most impressive comebacks in tennis history to defend his title.

You have got to remember that Novak [Djokovic] has never won a Major without dropping a set. It’s not the biggest deal in the world. I also think it helps him in moments like that when he is two sets to love down. Because he is enjoying it.

Mark Petchey told TNT Sports

Alcaraz increased his intensity in the third set against Sinner and saved three championship points in the fourth, before clinching it through a tie-breaker to force the decider and winning it after the 10-point tie-breaker. Sinner was playing his first French Open final.

He kind of comes and goes but when he comes at you, like he does against Sinner at times, he is an unstoppable force. It keeps him relaxed whereas a lot of people are getting more tight, more exasperated, and don’t really know what to do. But Carlos relaxes into himself and suddenly finds that gear that makes him untouchable.

Mark Petchey added

Alcaraz lifted his fifth Grand Slam title, becoming the third youngest to do so after Bjorn Borg and Rafael Nadal. He is also 5-0 in the final, while Sinner lost a Grand Slam final for the first time. The 22-year-old now holds an 8-4 head-to-head record over Sinner and has won their four consecutive matches.

Carlos Alcaraz reveals his tattoo plans after his French Open triumph

Carlos Alcaraz loves tattoos and has commemorated his Grand Slam victories by painting his body. He has four tattoos already, three of which he inked after winning his first US Open title in 2022, Wimbledon in 2023, and French Open last year.

He had planned the Olympic ring tattoo but didn’t get it due to his defeat to Novak Djokovic in the Paris Olympics final. When asked after his second consecutive French Open win about what tattoo he would get next, Alcaraz said that he would have to get his father’s permission.

I mean…I have to ask my father.

Carlos Alcaraz said during his on-court interview

Last year, he got an Eiffel Tower tattoo after beating Alexander Zverev in the French Open final. To celebrate his first Grand Slam victory, he tattooed the date of the final. After beating Novak Djokovic at the 2023 Wimbledon, he got a strawberry-shaped tattoo.

Alcaraz has concluded the clay swing as the most successful player on the ATP Tour. He reached the finals of every tournament he played on the surface, winning three as before Roland Garros, he captured the two Masters 1000 trophies in Monte Carlo and Rome (beat Jannik Sinner in the final) and had lost the Barcelona Open final to Holger Rune.

Next is the grass swing where the Spaniard has lifted three titles, two of which were back-to-back ones at Wimbledon (beat Djokovic both times). But before the grass-court Major, the five-time Grand Slam champion will be playing in the Queen’s Club Championships which he lifted in 2023. Sinner has only one grass-court title (last year’s Halle Open) under his belt.
