The Sheffield Shield which is the premium red-ball cricket tournament in Australia is currently taking place and there have been some exciting clashes. The ongoing match between New South Wales and Queensland saw a run-fest in the first innings as both batsmen merry. In the first innings, New South Wales’ Jason Sangha came up with a terrific hundred in the first innings to take his side to 381.

In reply, Queensland’s Marnus Labuschagne came up with yet another trademark hundred to destroy any hopes of an NSW victory. The innings led Queensland to a score of 433. In the third innings, New South Wales are currently on 49/2 with one more day to go as the game looks set to end in a draw unless a remarkable turnaround takes place.

New South Wales’ first innings came to an end when wicket-keeper Baxter Holt was dismissed by leg-spinner Mitchell Swepson. Labuschagne took a catch at cover as he held on even as he lost balance. While the catch itself was clean, what followed led to confusion among the commentators as well as the cricketers on the field.

Labuschagne seemed to lose control of the ball after holding on to it in the beginning. The ball popped out from behind his hand but the umpires deemed that the fielder had been in control of the ball and that the release was not due to him not being in control. This incident has caused divided opinion with social media voicing opinions for both sides.

Marnus Labuschagne will continue to play in the Sheffield Shield as he was not picked in the auction for the Indian Premier League.
