Martina Navratilova has slammed POTUS Donald Trump for his controversial remarks on the recent tragic shooting of two National Guard soldiers close to the White House on Wednesday. The two National Guard members were critically injured after being gunned down by an Afghan refugee.

The incident took place less than two blocks from the White House, in what was labeled as a targeted shooting. Police then revealed that a lone suspect opened fire on the two National Guard members from West Virginia before being subdued by other National Guard members nearby who had heard the gunfire.

Donald Trump was not in Washington, DC when the incident took place, as he was in Florida at that time. However, police reports revealed that the Afghan shooter entered the US illegally in September 2021 during the presidency of Joe Biden. That led to Trump pointing an accusing finger at the former American president’s immigration-friendly policy during his four-year tenure.

Trump revealed during his speech, which was published in The Economist, that the Biden administration allowed over 20 million illegal immigrants into the country. He added that it was the former president’s policy that led to the mishap:

This attack underscores the greatest national security threat facing our nation. The last administration let in 20 million unknown and unvetted foreigners from all over the world, from places that you don’t even want to know about. No country can tolerate such a risk to our very survival.

Martina Navratilova, who has been a big supporter of women in sport but a critic of Trump’s policy and ability to unify the country, reacted on X that Trump himself alongside his Secretary of War, Pete Hegseth has put the country in so much danger:

Our greatest national security risk is trump himself, with Hegseth right behind him.

Nonetheless, Trump ordered the National Guard to act as law enforcers in Washington DC after reports of increased offenses on the street. Currently, there are 2,000 National Guard troops in the capital. Most members of the force come from the District of Columbia as well as Louisiana, Mississippi, Ohio, South Carolina, West Virginia, Georgia, and Alabama.

Iga Swiatek finished the season with three titles. Following a slow start to the season in which she failed to reach a final, she surprised the tennis community by reaching the Bad Homburg Open final. Though she suffered a defeat in the championship match, it eventually led her to win her first grass-court title, beating Amanda Anisimova in the Wimbledon final.

The 24-year-old’s next title clinched was at the Cincinnati Open against Jasmine Paolini. It was her first WTA 1000 title since the 2024 Italian Open. Then, during the Asian swing, the six-time Grand Slam champion fulfilled a family dream by clinching the Korean Open by defeating Ekaterina Alexandrova.

Swiatek ended her 2025 season at the WTA Finals in Riyadh, where she managed to win just one match in the group stages. She then lost to Elena Rybakina and Amanda Anisimova, which ultimately led to her early exit from the tournament.

The six-time Grand Slam champion also helped Poland qualify for the 2026 Billie Jean King Cup Qualifiers. The Pole ended the season with 64 wins and 17 defeats. This season, the 24-year-old has recorded the most match wins of any woman for four consecutive years, becoming the fourth woman to do so. Before Swiatek, Steffi Graf, Martina Navratilova, and Chris Evert achieved it.
