Tennis legend Martina Navratilova expressed shock after learning that House Speaker Mike Johnson of Louisiana suggested certain conditions must be met to expedite disaster relief following the California wildfires.

On Sunday (January 19), during an episode of Meet the Press on NBC News, host Kristen Welker asked Johnson if he would provide aid with ‘no strings attached’. The 52-year-old Republican politician said he cannot provide unconditional relief.

No, I won’t commit to that because we have a serious problem in California. Listen, there are natural disasters. I’m from Louisiana. We’re prone to that. We understand how these things work, but then there’s also human error and when the state and local officials make foolish policy decisions that make the disaster exponentially worse.

Navratilova, who has always voiced her concerns on X regarding the problems the people are facing in California and also criticizing the government for the way they are handling it, simply wrote, “Wow…” to express her shock.

Martina Navratilova gives verdict on Elena Rybakina’s decision to hire Stefano Vukov

Elena Rybakina suffered a three-set defeat in the fourth round of the 2025 Australian Open to 19th seed Madison Keys on Monday (January 20). Rybakina, who was coached by Goran Ivanisevic, couldn’t include Stefano Vukov to her team in Melbourne as she is still waiting for WTA’s decision.

The WTA has handed a provisional suspension to Vukov, as he has been accused of breaking the Code of Conduct.

Rybakina parted ways with him last year before the US Open but rehired him before this year’s Australian Open, shocking the tennis community. They still can’t fathom the reason why, despite adding Ivanisevic to her team, she joined hands with Vukov again.

Many suspect abuse, including tennis great Pam Shriver, who is now coaching Donna Vekic. Martina Navratilova also broke her silence on the issue.

I just find it sad that you think this is normal. But it’s normal for her perhaps and she can handle it, more power to her. It doesn’t seem healthy, but here we are and I will not speculate any further than that. I just hope that she’s making the right decision.

Navratilova also thinks that many women don’t file complaints, which doesn’t mean they are ‘not abused’. Rybakina has always defended Vukov and even called out to those who criticized the coach.
