American tennis legend Martina Navratilova has again raised concerns about transgender athletes competing in women’s sports and potentially dominating other participants. She voiced these concerns after a trans-identified male won the Girls’ 200m Varsity event at the Sherwood Need for Speed Classic in Sherwood, Oregon.
With the video of the race going viral on social media, it reached the former American tennis ace as well. Navratilova took a jibe at people who brush the issue aside, saying there are only a couple of cases around the world. The 67-year-old then asked if it keeps happening, what will be the effects on the women participants.

Navratilova took to X to express her dissent on the issue. She reshared a post from a former MLA where the latter had called it “Not fair and not equitable” and had demanded that it “needs to stop” while quoting the video showing the trans athlete leaving other participants way behind.
Just a couple of cases, right? I ask- what about the girls?!?!?Martina Navratilova wrote on X
Martina Navratilova is not alone in seeing this issue
Martina Navratilova is not alone in flagging this issue of women’s sports getting plagued by the participation of trans athletes. The US House also identified this issue and tried to come up with a solution in the form of a bill that vowed to protect the rights of women’s sports.

The bill, titled Protection of Women and Girls in Sports Act and authored by Florida Republican Greg Steube, aimed to prohibit transgender athletes from competing on girls’ and women’s sports teams at federally funded educational institutions. Although it faced opposition from the Joe Biden-led Democrats, it did reflect that the government was aware of the problem.
Also, the citizens are equally worried about this rising problem. This was proved when a recent survey found that 69% of people say that transgender athletes should only be allowed to compete on sports teams that correspond with the sex they were assigned at birth, compared with 62% in 2021.
With concerns rising and elite athletes like Martina Navratilova raising their voices louder than ever, it is to be seen when does the government decides to frame a policy.
