Cody Rhodes suffered a crushing defeat against John Cena at WrestleMania, losing the Undisputed WWE Championship and falling short on his promise to protect WWE. The American Nightmare was visibly heartbroken after the loss and exited the venue without offering any reaction. Now, a major update has surfaced regarding his future with the company and a potential return down the line.

According to WrestleVotes, The Prodigal Son is currently in Florida, enjoying a well-deserved vacation with his family at Disney’s Hollywood Studios. WWE had reportedly planned this time off for Rhodes well in advance. A few selfies of The American Nightmare from his holiday have gone viral, confirming that he was indeed taking a break from WWE.

The 39-year-old was also absent from this week’s SmackDown, despite being previously advertised for the event. Currently, there is no confirmation on when the former Undisputed WWE Champion will return. However, it’s unlikely that WWE will keep him off television for long. Fans can expect Cody Rhodes to return around July or August to take part in the build-up to SummerSlam.

Moreover, there are plenty of potential feuds lined up for the former AEW star after dropping the Undisputed WWE Championship to John Cena. However, WWE could position him as Cena’s final opponent during the farewell tour, setting up a showdown to take the title off The Cenation Leader in December. It would be a full-circle moment and a symbolic passing of the torch.

The Rock wanted Cody Rhodes to turn heel ahead of WrestleMania 41

The Rock made his return to WWE in February with a massive proposal for Cody Rhodes. He offered him everything he desired in exchange for his loyalty. The Final Boss demanded that The American Nightmare become his champion and work under his wing. However, Rhodes refused, leading to the ultimate heel turn of John Cena. While The Great One got his answer at Elimination Chamber, he is far from done with Rhodes yet.

Speaking on The Pat McAfee Show, the Hollywood star revealed that he originally wanted The Prodigal Son to turn heel at Elimination Chamber. Although WWE moved forward with a different plan last month, the heel turn was not off the table. The Brahma Bull stated that Rhodes’ eventual turn is inevitable, not because of titles, but because of deeper, generational reasons.

Down the line I like the idea of that, and this idea of way down the road, you give him a reason to turn not based on titles, but his soul and what that means, that effects generations.

Furthermore, Dwayne Johnson added that he will revisit his desire to take Rhodes’ soul somewhere down the line. The Final Boss made it clear that he and The American Nightmare will cross paths again in WWE. However, until then, he’s excited to see how WWE continues to shape the former AEW star’s story following his bitter loss to John Cena at WrestleMania.

WWE legend Matt Hardy gave his thoughts on Cody Rhodes vs. John Cena’s WrestleMania main event

John Cena and Cody Rhodes delivered one of the most controversial main events in WrestleMania history. The ending, which saw Travis Scott land sloppy punches on Rhodes to help Cena become a 17-time World Champion, has drawn heavy criticism from fans. Now, former WWE star Matt Hardy has shared his thoughts on the WrestleMania 41 main event.

Speaking on the Extreme Life podcast, Matt Hardy shared that he wished The Rock had appeared during the main event. He felt The Final Boss’ involvement was necessary to make the story feel complete at WrestleMania. However, Hardy noted that WWE went in a very unique direction instead, which ultimately made Cody Rhodes look weak.

The biggest critique I have was that finish and protecting Cody and the way it was done. I would have loved to seen Rock there, I felt like The Rock being there would have made sense, it would have kind of tied everything together that was part of the story.

The former WWE Tag Team Champion believes that even if The Great One wasn’t originally planned to appear, WWE should have added a little more drama to the main event. However, he felt that what was presented came off as bland and lacked any real connection to the overall story.
