Andy Murray is largely regarded as one of the greatest players to have graced the court. However, his influence has often been overshadowed by the Big 3’s dominant spell in the sport. Tennis legend Mats Wilander has always been a big supporter of the British icon. He recently backed the 37-year-old to become one of the greatest coaches ever in the sport.
Murray ended his professional career after competing for two long decades on the court. He retired, winning three Grand Slams, as well as two Olympic gold medals. Murray was given a well-deserved tribute at Wimbledon. But decided to hang his racket at the Paris Olympics after losing in the quarterfinals alongside his partner Dan Evans.
However, questions about the British legend’s return to the sport in a coaching capacity were asked several times. However, Murray admitted on numerous occasions that he would take a spell away from tennis and spend time with his family instead.
Now, less than six months after Murray’s retirement, one of the tennis greats, Mats Wilander, backed him to become a coach.
Since Murray retired in August, he has been practicing his swings at a golf course in Scotland. He recently changed his X profile to “I play tennis. I now play golf.”
Mats Wilander believes Andy Murray is the best to coach Casper Ruud
While Mats Wilander has backed Andy Murray to become a coach, he has also chosen a pupil for him. The tennis legend has revealed that Casper Ruud needs Murray as his coach. The former has failed to make an impact in recent years, despite earning his breakthrough in the ATP in the mid-2010s.
Ruud was dubbed to be among the best players but in recent years, Carlos Alcaraz and Jannik Sinner have come through in his place. The World No. 7 failed to reach any final since August. Wilander believes that Murray will inspire Ruud to get to his best.
Ruud is currently in Turn ahead of the ATP Finals which gets underway on November 10. He is hoping to end the year on a high by winning the event title.
