Matteo Berrettini‘s coach, Vincenzo Santopadre, has mentioned two players who could challenge Jannik Sinner and Carlos Alcaraz at the US Open. Sinner and Alcaraz will be the top two seeds heading into the final Grand Slam of the season.
Santopadre believes that Taylor Fritz and Ben Shelton will be the two players to challenge the top two players at Flushing Meadows. Both the Americans have had breakthroughs in New York, reaching the final in 2024 and the semifinals in 2023, respectively. Santopadre said on OA Sport:
It’s not as if they are Martians, in a way. We can think of Fritz, given his arrival last year, who learned to play well even at home; or Shelton, who could perhaps go all the way and who won in Toronto. They can cause them problems. That’s what I think. Of course, as I said, Sinner and Alcaraz have a head start and therefore, in terms of percentage, it’s easy to predict that they will face each other in the final.
Sinner and Alcaraz have won the last seven Grand Slam titles. This year, Sinner has won Australian Open and Wimbledon. The duo played one of the greatest Grand Slam finals in history at Roland Garros, where Alcaraz prevailed in five sets.
Fritz made the semifinals at Wimbledon recently, losing to Alcaraz in four sets. He has lost to Sinner in the finals of the US Open and the ATP Finals last year.
Jannik Sinner advances by beating Adrian Mannarino
World No. 1 Jannik Sinner advanced to the Cincinnati Open quarter-finals with a 6-4, 7-6 (7-4) win over Adrian Mannarino. The Italian made a fast start, breaking the 37-year-old Frenchman in the third game to take control. Mannarino, ranked 89th, fought hard but could not prevent Sinner from securing the opening set.

The match was interrupted by rain early in the second set. Play stopped with Sinner serving at 40-30 while trailing 2-1. After a delay of nearly two hours and 45 minutes, both players returned to court. Mannarino showed greater resistance after the restart, making Sinner work for every point.
At 5-5 in the second set, Mannarino saved three break points. On the fourth, a backhand into the net handed Sinner the game and a chance to serve for victory. However, Mannarino struck back with a forehand return winner to break and level the set once again.
In the tie-break, Sinner’s serve proved decisive. Back-to-back aces sealed the 7-4 win in the breaker, maintaining his perfect 4-0 record against Mannarino. The result confirmed Sinner’s place in the last eight as he continued his strong run in Cincinnati.
Carlos Alcaraz advances into the Cincinnati Masters quarterfinals
Carlos Alcaraz expressed pride in his performance after defeating Luca Nardi in straight sets at the 2025 Cincinnati Open. The world No. 2 overcame the 98th-ranked Italian, who entered the event as a lucky loser, with a 6-1, 6-4 victory in the last 16. Nardi, 22, was unable to match Alcaraz’s intensity throughout the match.

In the opening set, Alcaraz broke serve twice to take control early and dominate. The second set saw him trail 2-4 before producing a strong surge. He won four consecutive games to complete the win and secure his place in the next round.
The five-time Grand Slam champion posted solid serving numbers. He landed 65% of his first serves and won 83% of those points. On his second serve, he won 56% of points. His shot count was balanced, with 10 winners and 10 unforced errors.
Having beaten Damir Dzumhur and Hamad Medjedovic in earlier rounds, Alcaraz felt this was his sharpest display of the tournament. The win marked his third quarter-final in Cincinnati after appearances in 2022 and 2023. His best showing to date was a runner-up finish last year.
