Jannik Sinner ended the 2024 season as the best player on the ATP Tour. The World No. 1 began the season by winning the Australian Open. Ten months later, he helped Italy retain the Davis Cup title in Malaga.
Last year, Sinner did the impossible for Italy by helping the team win the Davis Cup, ending its 48-year drought. On Sunday (November 24), Matteo Berrettini laid the foundation for Italians by beating the Netherlands’ Botic van de Zandschulp 6-4, 6-2.
Jannik Sinner then took to the court to face Tallon Griekspoor in the second tie of the final. He prevailed in the first set despite his opponent’s aggressive display. In the second set, he increased the tempo and claimed the Davis Cup title for Italy by winning 7-6(2), 6-2.
It was Sinner’s 73rd victory of the year. With it, he became the first player in history to win multiple Grand Slams, the ATP Finals, and the Davis Cup in the same season. Sinner’s teammate and friend Berrettini stated that the 23-year-old was an inspiration to him.
Sinner ended the year winning eight titles and has only lost twice since August. He claimed his year-end No. 1 title at the ATP Finals in Turin and returned the favor by winning the title after beating Taylor Fritz in straight sets.
Matteo Berrettini excited for playing major role in Italy’s Davis Cup victory
After a series of frustrating, injury-plagued seasons, Matteo Berrettini can have a sigh of relief with his 2024 season. After struggling at the beginning of the year, the World No. 35 embarked on a comeback in Marrakech, where he won the ATP 250 title and returned to the Top 100 in the world rankings.
He then finished as runner-up at the Stuttgart Open, losing to Jack Draper in the final. After playing a major role in making sure Italy retained the Davis Cup title for the first time in the country’s history, he stated that he was excited about earning some points on the court.
Berrettini went on to win the ATP 250 titles in Gstaad and Kitzbuhel, which helped him get back to the Top 40 in the world rankings. He will be looking forward to building on this momentum next year.
