The Australian Open kicks off this Sunday (January 12) in Melbourne and we are just a few days from it. Jannik Sinner is the pole favorite to defend the title having proved how excellent he can be on the court in such a big stage. However, his fellow compatriot, Matteo Berrettini sees Carlos Alcaraz and Novak Djokovic as big threats to his big.
During a recent interview, Berrettini, Sinner’s teammate at the Davis Cup, tipped the World No.1 to win the title. But he added that the Italian must fight as Alcaraz and Djokovic are the biggest threats.
I think he proved to us and himself that he’s the best player in the world right now. He loves to play in these kinds of conditions. He helped us win the Davis Cup again. So, he’s definitely the favorite for the title. But, the field is strong. Carlos is hungry, Djokovic is always there, and other players want to lift this trophy. So, he’s gonna have to fight.

Sinner dominated the 2024 season from start to finish. The Italian opened his account by winning the Melbourne Grand Slam and closed it with an excellent display at the ATP Finals in Turin. All the same, he claimed eight title, more than any player on tour, including two Grand Slams and three Masters 1000 titles.
Nonetheless, he failed to beat Carlos Alcaraz in a tour-level match last year. The 23-year-old met the Spaniard thrice and failed to defeat, eventually leading to Alcaraz always winning the title. Sinner defeated Djokovic twice last season, but the Serbian has sought reinforcement from Andy Murray ahead of the first Grand Slam of the year.
Sinner and Alcaraz didn’t participate in any warm-up event ahead of the Australian Open, while Djokovic competed at the Brisbane International. The three stars are favorites to win the title, with Djokovic seeking to make it his 25th Grand Slam title.
Matteo Berrettini hopes for an injury-free season as he plays in his 8th Australian Open since turning pro
Matteo Berrettini has struggled with injuries in recent years. The 28-year-old was forced to withdraw from several tournaments last season, including the Australian Open, because of a foot injury. He ended his ATP season retiring in the second round of the Japan Open against Arthur Fils after suffering an abdominal issue.

However, this season he is fit and and will play at the Australian Open. During the aforementioned interview, he revealed that he is looking forward to injury free season.
I’m super excited to be here (Melbourne). I always have nice memories here, and it’s going to be the 8th Australian Open as a pro. It’s starting to be a little bit like a veteran. This year, hopefully, it’s going to be a year full of matches and without struggling with injuries and stuff. That’s the first goal for this year.
