Matthew Judon has been quite in the news lately, over his ugly contract dispute with the New England Patriots. Although he was eligible for an extension for quite some time, things got intense when he publicly voiced his displeasure over his contract situation. Ultimately, a new deal was signed and the star pass rusher was traded to the Atlanta Falcons.
While Judon will be seen sporting a black jersey with his name in the coming season, he reportedly will be playing without a contract. But the shocking part is, he made the decision.
In an exclusive interview on NBC Sports Boston‘s Sports Sunday, Judon opened up about his infamous contract negotiation with New England, revealing the ‘negotiation’ never actually happened face-to-face.
I don't know– I feel like we just never sat down and really came to the table with me. So I think that's the biggest point. It's like, they kind of didn't know where I was at (and) we kind of didn't know where they were at. It was just always through text message or phone calls. We just never sat down and actually talked about it. I think that was the biggest disconnect.Matthew Judon said
He further revealed that he once requested the Patriots’ front office for a face-to-face discussion over his contract extension. However, they denied his request. Leaving his home team wasn’t easy for Judon, but he believed a fresh start was needed by everyone.
Matthew Judon leaves Patriots with fond memories
Although the four-time Pro Bowler is excited about starting a new chapter of his professional life in Atlanta, he knows that he will always be connected to Boston in many ways. Not only did he share fond memories with the Patriots, but he was deeply connected with the community.
Boston is connected in so many ways. They all believe sports; everybody believes sports down there, and I just embraced it. It's a sports town. It's title town. So, to all the fans out there that I no longer get to hang out with or you're not going to see me on a day-to-day basis, I appreciate y'all for what y'all did for my career.Matthew Judon said
For the coming season, Judon shared that he intends to play recklessly and destroy his opponents. The first step in doing so is learning the playbook with his new team and embracing the new opportunity with an open heart.
