The New England Patriots are in a full rebuilding phase. After letting go of longtime head coach Bill Belichick, they are paving the way for new head coach Jerod Mayo to establish his imprint on the team. Establishing an imprint is an easier term to say for bringing in or trading away players who fit with the new head coach’s vision.

With the way it is going so far, it seems Matthew Judon might not be a part of that vision. The pass rusher’s contract is about to expire after next season. Generally, that means players start to negotiate a year in advance.

With this reply, it is clear that Judon knows his time might be up at Foxboro. Even though he is their best player, he is a valuable trade asset.

Matthew Judon is about to be 32 years old and is coming off a season-ending injury. Add to that, he earns almost $15 million. With his expiring contract, the stud pass rusher will be a good investment for a Super Bowl contender. Something the Patriots are definitely not heading into this season.

If they can get a decent draft pick in return, it will help continue this rebuilding process. Therefore, they cannot scare teams away by signing him to a long-term contract. The former Grand Valley State standout could be on his way to another team before the season starts.

New England Patriots new era without Matthew Judon

Jerod Mayo came through the ranks of the Patriot Way. He himself was their lead linebacker who led the league in tackles at one point. But injuries cut his career short, and he was forced to retire. He knows how it is for players who struggle towards the end. Therefore, that thought process might be the reason Mayo may not want to keep Matthew Judon for long.

In fact, it is not surprising that Mayo does not have a single starter touching 30 apart from Judon and center David Andrews. Suggesting that the Patriots are rebuilding with a young roster in mind. Therefore, if one of the veterans becomes a trade asset, it is best to trade him away for a draft pick. Mayo also wants the defense to find its own rhythm going forward.

Jerod Mayo wants to win football games. For that, he will need the team to buy in. Once bought into his vision, he and his coaches can look to develop the players to play at their best. Matthew Judon is way past development, which is why he could be on the way out before it is too late.
