D’Angelo Russell can be a very polarizing player. The 2019 NBA All-Star seemed to be the right fit after moving to the Dallas Mavericks. With Kyrie Irving suffering a long-term injury, it looked like Russell would suit well playing alongside 2025 NBA draft number one pick, Cooper Flagg, who would be the secondary ball-handler. But unfortunately for Russell, that has not been the case so far.
The former Lakers player has often being criticized for lacking consistency in his game. Over the last three games, he has been coming off the bench as Jason Kidd tries to find his best rotation till the return of his star players. Russell struggled to clock in even 20 minutes for four consecutive games till he played 39 minutes in the overtime 133-127 loss to the Los Angeles Clippers on Friday night.
It was an impressive offensive game for the guard as he scored 28 points, his first 20-point game in six games, which just shows how streaky of a player he is. While it is not Russell’s fault for the mess the Mavericks are in and how poor they have been this season, as they currently sit at 14th in the Western Conference standings with only three wins in 13 games, just one win more than the last placed New Orleans Pelicans, he has not helped his case in any way either.

Things did look better on Friday for Russell as he caught fire late and hit four straight game-tying buckets to send the game to overtime, but unfortunately, he also missed some key free throws during the overtime period that would have put Dallas on top.
He also committed more turnovers than assists. He did have the opportunity to win Dallas the game at the end of regulation but ended up taking a tough shot at the buzzer, much to the displeasure of his teammates on the court.
New role for D’Angelo Russell in Dallas
It has not been smooth sailing for the 29-year-old. The management is in disarray, key players are injured and with only one win their last eight games, they cannot catch a break at the moment. The guard would have expected to be a starter till the return of Irving but finds himself coming off the bench, as he tries to find his best rhythm heading forward.
Russell is averaging 12.2 points, 2.9 rebounds and 4.8 assists so far this season, shooting at 38.3% from the field and a poor 24.2% from the three-point line. The stats show how inconsistent he has been this season and why the Lakers had to let him go.
After the game, Russell spoke to the media for the first time since the season started. When asked about his role with the Mavericks and coming off the bench so far this season. Russell said:
I don’t care. I’m just trying to hoop. Trying to figure out my momentum with whatever minutes I am getting. Consistency is all we want as players so trying to find some consistency and what is out there on the table for us.
“I don’t care. I’m just trying to hoop.”

Nico Harrison has been sacked
Things do not seem to be in order for the Mavericks off-the-court either. It has been announced that Nico Harrison has been relieved of his role as the general manager and president of basketball operations. Mavericks fans had been calling for Harrison’s termination since the moment that he traded Luka Doncic.

The team governor, Patrick Dumont, regretted approving Harrison’s plan to dump Doncic, according to sources. The fans made their voices heard as well with “Fire Nico!” chants heard all over the American Airlines Center. A disgruntled Dallas fan wearing a LA Lakers Luka Doncic jersey confronted Dumont, when the Mavericks took on the Bucks on 10 November.
It will be interesting to see how and where the Mavericks head from here. Coming off a finals appearance in 2024, the ship appears to be sinking at present.
