The 2026 F1 season so far hasn’t been kind to four times champion Max Verstappen. His Red Bull challenger has failed to earn him a top-5 finish this season, with the P6 finish in the season opener at Australia. The DNF at China was his lowest point of the season. Following last Sunday’s race at Suzuka, where the car once again failed him, he hinted at an early retirement.
After continuing his criticism of the new regulation which he has previously called anti-racing and Formula-E on steroids, the Dutchman admitted that F1 is no longer fun for him. He has explained many times in the past that he will retire when racing is no longer fun and when asked about it, he admitted that he is thinking about moving on from the premier racing series in the world.
That’s what I’m saying. I’m thinking about everything inside this paddock. Privately, I’m very happy. You also wait for 24 races. This time it’s 22. But normally 24. And then you just think about is it worth it? Or do I enjoy being more at home with my family? Seeing my friends more when you’re not enjoying your sport?
Max Verstappen told the media after Japanese GP.
Further talking about the point, Max Verstappen pointed out that he understands he can’t be dominating the sport many years as he did for years as regulation changes pecking orders every time. But the win hungry driver in him is hating the change and stopping him from enjoying F1 has used to do just a year ago.
I can easily accept to be in P7 or P8 where I am. Because I also know that you can’t be dominating or be first or second or whatever, fighting for a podium every time. I’m very realistic in that, and I’ve been there before. I’ve not only been winning in F1. But at the same time, when you are in P7 or P8, and you are not enjoying the whole formula behind it, it doesn’t feel natural to a racing driver.
Max Verstappen added, as reported via BBC.
Red Bull responds to Max Verstappen’s retirement hints
The Red Bull racing team Chief Laurent Mekies has shared his thoughts on Max Verstappen’s comments at Suzuka. He pointed out that the team is working hard behind the scenes to deliver a fast car for Max Verstappen. They are confident with the right car; the veteran will make a difference on the car sooner than later.

We certainly focus on the competitive picture, that’s what we do. We are having zero discussions about the other aspects, so we have a lot of work to do. I am sure that by the time we give Max a faster car, he will be a much happier Max, and by the time we give him a car he can push with and make a difference, he will also be a happier Max.
Laurent Mekies said.
It will be a massive loss for Formula One as well as Red Bull, if Max Verstappen decides to retire over the regulations. But at the same time, it will be huge negative mark on the Dutchman’s legacy as the elite drivers as well as the teams should always try to find ways to make their car faster when the regulations changes.
