Mayank Agarwal appointed Punjab Kings captain ahead of IPL 2022 season
Indian opener Mayank Agarwal has been named as Punjab Kings skipper for the upcoming season of the IPL tournament, the club confirmed on February 28 (Monday).
The opening batter has been an integral part of the IPL franchise since 2018. Mayank Agarwal served as the club’s vice-captain and also led the club during KL Rahul’s absence last season.
Mayank Agarwal was one of two players retained by the franchise ahead of the mega auction. He was retained for Rs 12 crore alongside uncapped bowler Arshdeep Singh.
The Kings had finished at sixth place in IPL 2021 but will have hope to make it to the playoffs in the upcoming season.

Mayank Agarwal has scored 2131 runs in 100 appearances in the Indian Premier League to date. He averages 23.41 and has a strike rate of 135.47. The 31-year old player has played 47 matches for the Punjab Kings across four seasons. With 1317 runs for the Kings, the Indian player has emerged himself as a consistent player.
“I am working at Punjab Kings since 2018, and I really enjoy representing my company. I am excited for all the opportunities given to me so far, as I take on this new responsibility with sincerity. It does also give me more security that someone else is watching over the team if anything happens. But although we have an experienced staff and some talented youngsters, who are keen to grab the opportunity and run with it.” said Mayank Agarwal on the new role.
Mayank shared his excitement for the new season, “Hope to lift maiden IPL trophy.” As the leader of the team, Mayank hopes to lead his teammates with incredible teamwork and spirit.
Anil Kumble explained that Mayank has the skills required to lead the Punjab Kings. He wants to create a strong foundation for the future with Mayank at the helm.
