Luke Weaver is heading across the town. On Wednesday, reports emerged that the former New York Yankees star had agreed to a 2-year, $22 million deal with the New York Mets and will be joining the cross-town rivals of his ex-employees.

Over the past two seasons, Weaver established himself as a relief pitcher. The American international started his career as a starting pitcher, but struggled in this role. In 2023, he signed a 1-year deal with the Cincinnati Reds.

His tenure with the Reds was a disappointing one as he gave up 24 home runs in 21 starts with a 6.87 ERA. He was then designated for assignment (DFA) on August 16 and released by the team two days later.

He would sign a one-year deal with the Seattle Mariners. In 5 appearances, he pitched with an ERA of 6.08 and was designated for assignment within a few days by them as well. The Yankees then picked him up and re-signed him on a one-year deal with a club option for 2025 in January 2024.

Weaver would become a relief pitcher for the Yankees in 2024. After earning his first save in September 2024, he was named the closing pitcher of the team for their postseason run. In 12 appearances, he went 1-0 with 4 saves and pitched with an ERA of 1.76.

During the offseason, the Yankees would trade for Devin Williams and made him the closing pitcher. After the ex-Milwaukee Brewers star struggled in this role, manager Aaron Boone would give Weaver the role of the closing pitcher once again.

In June, the 32-year-old would sustain a hamstring injury and was placed on the injured list. The 2025 postseason was another rough ride for him, as in 3 appearances, he gave up 8 earned runs through 12 hits and recorded just one out.

With the Mets losing Edwin Diaz to the Los Angeles Dodgers through free agency, they were looking for some experienced arms in the bullpen. They have now roped in Weaver on a 2-year deal, making him the latest player to switch teams in New York.

This development left several fans on social media trolling them. Users on X took a shot at them for bringing in another former Yankees star. One user wrote, “Little brother activity continues“, while taking a swipe at the Mets for this.

Earlier this offseason, the Mets brought in Devin Williams. The pitcher, who spent the 2025 season with the Yankees, joined the National League East side on a 3-year, $51 million deal. With Edwin Diaz going to the Dodgers a few days later after this deal, Williams will once again have to compete with Weaver for the closer role.

Luke Weaver becomes latest star to go from Yankees to Mets in recent years

In recent years, there have been several developments that have seen a player go from the New York Yankees to the New York Mets. Luke Weaver is now the latest star to go from donning the pinstripes of the Yankees to wearing the white, orange and blue of the Mets.

Last offseason, Juan Soto shattered the internet when he picked the $765 million offer of the Mets instead of the $760 million deal of the Yankees. Pitcher Clay Holmes was another name the Yankees lost to the Mets that year.

Two seasons ago, Luis Severino joined the Mets. The starting pitcher, who had a great start to his Yankees career, struggled heavily with injuries and had a tough time in the 2023 season. In the offseason, he would leave the Bronx and head across town.

Other former Yankees who joined the Mets in the past few seasons include Harrison Bader and Frankie Montas. Even their manager, Carlos Mendoza, was a former Yankee.

Speaking of the Yankees, they now have two bullpen holes to fill following the departure of Williams and Weaver. Who will they bring in to replace this two former stars remains to be seen.
