The MLB offseason has picked up some heat in the past few days. One major name is now moving across the city as pitcher Luis Severino has agreed to join the New York Mets after becoming a free agent. The Dominican professional star has agreed on a one-year $13 million deal to join his rival team.
Before this, Severino spent his entire career in the Bronx while playing for the New York Yankees. The right-hander had some incredible years with the team but has since been on a huge downfall. The 2023 season was one of the most poor ones for him. At one point he even admitted to feeling like he was the worst pitcher in the whole league.
However, Severino was not the only one who struggled this season. The 2023 MLB year proved to be a nightmare for the two NY sides as they both endured one of their worst seasons. Both teams missed out on the playoffs. While the Yankees finished with an 82-80 record, the Mets finished the campaign below .500 percentage with 75-87.
A move to the Mets could be a big one for Severino who has been struggling for form. The Mets themselves needed some pitchers to improve their pitching rotation as they lost both veterans Max Scherzer and Justin Verlander before the August deadline.
Social media reactions towards Luis Severino’s deal with NY Mets
There was no running from the fact that Luis Severino had a disastrous campaign last time out. The 29-year-old southpaw has suffered several injuries in the past and was injured at the start of the season as well. After making an impressive return in May, Severino was unable to keep up those performances.
His ERA would quickly rise up as he gave away runs in crucial situations. He was also left emotional after he got injured during the game against the Milwaukee Brewers in September. This game turned out to be his last start appearance for the Yankees.
Fans on social media were quick to react to this development. Some fans questioned the amount the Mets had been paying. One user wrote, “Insane overpay,” while referring to his one-year $13 million deal. Check out some more reactions regarding Severino’s switch from Yankees to Mets from X below:
As for his stats, Severino finished the season with a poor 4-8 record with a high ERA of 6.65. In his time at the mound last season, the pitcher only managed to pick up 79 strikeouts as well and he struggled for good outings. Perhaps the change in scenery is something he needs to get back to his best form again in the future.
