The Indiana Hoosiers-Miami Hurricanes National Championship Game was a dramatic affair. The Hoosiers cruised to their maiden football title with an electrifying finish led by quarterback Fernando Mendoza, who showed up big time in a fourth-and-five touchdown run.
The drama followed into the post-game when the Hurricanes running back Mark Fletcher Jr. tried to hit Indiana’s defensive lineman Tyrique Tucker. Fletcher apparently attempted a punch at Tucker, leading to an altercation amid the celebrations.
It took some officials and team members to break up the chaos. It also culminated in a nasty end of a defining game for Fletcher, who had previously shone with 112 yards on 17 carries and a game-shifting 57-yard touchdown run.

Tyrique Tucker didn’t let that one pass over easily. Fletcher’s reaction during the frustrating moments took a turn in the online circles, and Tucker made a point to repost one such tweet with a quote of his own. Tucker, who followed Curt Cignetti from James Madison Dukes to the Hoosiers, retweeted with the caption, “(Clown emoticon) Hold that L Ring US (laughing emoticon).”

However, recent reports suggest that there’s more to the incident than what’s making the online rounds. Mike Rumph, Miami’s Director of Recruiting, added that Fletcher’s actions were in reaction to Tucker taking a shot at the running back’s late father, Mark Fletcher Sr. The senior Fletcher, who was known as Big Mark to the Miami team, passed away in 2024.
Dude was talking about Mark’s dad, who passed away last year. Mark is and always will be one of the most classy people you will meet. RIP Mr. Fletcher.

Mark Fletcher Jr. stayed behind to congratulate opponent QB Fernando Mendoza
As details emerge regarding the Mark Fletcher Jr. and Tyrique Tucker altercation, the media have spotted another incident involving the running back during the post game events. Fletcher reportedly waited for the Hoosiers QB Fernando Mendoza to congratulate him for the clutch win.

Fletcher had left for the locker room while Mendoza was doing his rounds for the media houses and panels. He had waited for him, personally congratulated him, and hugged him. While the incident with the defensive lineman was quite a nasty business, his classy act later was picked up.
Total class act. Mark Fletcher comes to find Fernando post game. He stood and waited a long time. Fletcher ran his heart out. I truly LOVE that kid. So excited he is back for @CanesFootball pic.twitter.com/pyq8PDcMg2

The incident was quite a contrast from the actions of the Canes quarterback. Carson Beck, the Canes’ counterpart of Mendoza, didn’t wait up, rejecting a handshake with the Heisman winner. While Beck was considerably upset with the loss to finish his collegiate career, his post-game inaction has been called out as classless by the fans and critics. The fact that Fletcher stayed back becomes more wholesome when contrasted with the leader of his team’s reaction to the loss.
As for Fletcher, he had a mixed evening. He played a brilliant game, produced the second-longest touchdown run in CFB history, had an ugly altercation with an opponent after the loss, and stayed behind to congratulate the winning quarterback. He will be back in the Canes’ jersey next season when they will look to one-up the 2025 season. Meanwhile, Mendoza and Beck will probably feature in the upcoming NFL Draft, where both are highly sought-out talents.
