Michael Chandler has officially stepped away from his long-awaited fight with Conor McGregor. The two were expected to headline a UFC event in 2024. Due to delays, primarily related to McGregor’s recovery and issues surrounding his USADA testing, the fight never materialized. It left Chandler in limbo. Now, ‘Iron’ has different plans in sight, which he recently revealed on social media.

Michael Chandler expressed frustration with Conor McGregor‘s prolonged absence and erratic behavior. Chandler has decided to move forward with a rematch against Charles Oliveira at UFC 309 in November. Chandler views this rematch as a personal redemption opportunity. The video released by Chandler involved some trash-talk to mock the Irishman.

The simple fact of the matter is, you are the most unreliable human being that has ever graced mixed martial arts...If you can finally pony up, then I will fight Conor after I dispatch with Charles Oliveira.

With McGregor’s unpredictable nature, Chandler could not afford to miss further opportunities to advance his career. McGregor had initially fired back on social media, accusing Chandler of ducking the fight. Despite the public sparring, there is still some hope that their fight could still happen.

Charles Oliveira is a former lightweight champion and a high-profile opponent. A victory in the rematch would likely make Chandler the No. 1 contender for the lightweight title. He referred to Oliveira as “the dude who stole my dream” in their previous encounter. Chandler is excited about the fight and the potential path it opens toward title contention.

Michael Chandler plans to become UFC champion by 2025

Michael Chandler has shifted his focus to a potential lightweight title shot against Islam Makhachev. If Chandler can defeat Oliveira, he plans to challenge Makhachev, predicting that he will be the UFC lightweight champion by 2025. By beating Oliveira, ‘Iron’ believes he will earn the number one contender spot.

Then, he will have a chance to face either Makhachev or Arman Tsarukyan, depending on the outcomes of upcoming fights. Chandler joined the UFC in 2020 and quickly made a name for himself in the promotion.

He chased the elusive title and came close when he faced Oliveira in 2021. Despite a strong start, Chandler lost via TKO in the second round. The stakes are higher, and Chandler is determined to redeem that loss.

If Chandler defeats Oliveira this time, he might be in a prime position to challenge for the lightweight title once again. Makhachev, recovering from injury, is expected to defend his title against Arman Tsarukyan in early 2025. Chandler’s road to the title could thus involve either Makhachev or Tsarukyan, depending on how the Dagestani’s return plays out.
