Vince McMahon launched the inaugural Survivor Series PPV in 1987 to rival WCW’s Starrcade, which annually aired in November. Since then, this PLE has given fans countless memories of its 37-year-old history. These include the debut of many notable superstars, returns, classic matches, and even other hilarious moments like the hatching of the Gobbledy Gooker. Thus, it was interesting to see Michael Cole name his favorite moment at the PLE as one involving The Shield.

During the Countdown to Survivor Series: WarGames, the panel took turns to talk about their favorite Survivor Series moments over the past few decades. Cole recalled the debut of The Shield in 2012, when Dean Ambrose, Seth Rollins, and Roman Reigns showed up as mercenaries for CM Punk. It was interesting to see the WWE commentator mention Jon Moxley by name, although he has been in AEW for half a decade now.

Michael Cole remarked that this was truly a night that changed professional wrestling, as evident by how successful they have all been in the industry. The Shield immediately made a huge impact on the main roster, shaking things up tremendously. All three of them held gold for a long time. Furthermore, they beat almost everyone there was for them to beat, including legends such as Evolution.

The Shield’s split in 2014 did not slow things down for them individually at all. The three wrestlers went on to win multiple world championships and become some of the biggest superstars in the company. For a long time, Rollins, Reigns, and Ambrose were, and arguably still are, the leaders of their respective brands: Raw, SmackDown, and AEW, respectively.

Roman Reigns declares The Shield’s debut as the most special thing that ever happened at Survivor Series

Michael Cole is not the only one who carries this opinion. In fact, one of the superstars being talked about, Roman Reigns, also echoes the same sentiment. Speaking on Sports Illustrated, the OTC acknowledged that the Survivor Series has featured the debuts of many superstars, including The Undertaker and The Rock. The show is also where Sting made his first-ever WWE appearance back in 2015.

Regardless, the 39-year-old still believed that his debut as part of the Shield was the most special thing that took place at the event. It was a case of three generational talents coming in at the same time and changing the professional landscape forever. In fact, the storyline still provides fans with interesting content to this day. The deep history of betrayal between Reigns and Rollins is always lurking in the background and affecting storylines, sometimes in major ways.

My career has been so long and I’ve been involved in (so much). I debuted at Survivor Series. I don’t even know. I have to go with that. My debut. The Shield’s debut is the most special thing that ever happened at Survivor Series. There are a lot of really great debuts.

It is also quite ironic how events have turned out for this year’s Survivor Series: WarGames. Twelve years ago, Reigns showed up as a mercenary for the Best in the World. Today, even after becoming the biggest superstar in the company, the former WWE Undisputed Champion had to rely on CM Punk to complete his WarGames squad and help him out in his fight against his family.
