Another season and another early playoff exit for the Pittsburgh Steelers has put head coach Mike Tomlin in a bad spot. Not only are they struggling to take their game to the next level, but fans are getting frustrated with their product.
In the last five seasons, Mike Tomlin has led the Pittsburgh Steelers to four playoffs. However, all four of them ended at the Wild Card stage, leaving Steelers fans continuing their wait for the Super Bowl glory. In fact, other than the winning Super Bowl XLIII, the Steelers have returned just once to play in the big game.
In his 18 seasons with the team, Tomlin has a playoff game record of 8-11. However, he has also never had a losing season, despite not having the best squads at his disposal. That seemingly interested teams looking for head coaches and rumors spread of them wanting to trade for him. When reporters asked Mike Tomlin about it, he replied;

This message from the 52-year-old was loud and clear. He has no intentions to leave the Pittsburgh Steelers and won’t entertain any teams looking for a trade. Tomlin has his family rooted into the Pittsburgh community and as long as he keeps winning, they will stay there.
However, those rumors may not stop as teams are seeking top candidates for vacant head coaching jobs. But the quality of top available personnel is limited. That makes the situation easier for the Steelers HC as even they will be reluctant to let him go.
Mike Tomlin has tough decisions to make ahead of next season
Even if Mike Tomlin shut down any potential advances from other teams, he might be aware that he needs to do better. There is no doubt about his ability to lead a group of men to play above and beyond what they are capable of putting out on the field.
However, the Pittsburgh Steelers are a proud organization who take their Steel City mindset to heart. They love a hard grinding team that goes out to win. Tomlin’s coaching style does resonate with that mindset as the Steelers have showed so far.
However, the situation at quarterback has to improve. Russell Wilson showed major improvements over his previous season. But it still was not enough, as the team lost their last five games to eventually end their season. With the dearth of quality personnel at that position, Tomlin might stick with Wilson next season.
But he might have to work on a backup plan soon. George Pickens‘ cryptic comments are adding to the notion that all is not well in that locker room. Mike Tomlin has to shore things up if the Steelers faithful are to continue with their unabashed support for their team.
