In a major setback for Arsenal this season, new signing Mikel Merino has reportedly suffered a shoulder injury that would sideline him for multiple weeks. The 28-year-old midfielder sustained a shoulder injury during his first training session with the club.
Mikel Merino recently completed his £31.6 million transfer to the Emirates from Real Sociedad, after a stellar campaign with both club and country. He ended the previous season with eight goals and five assists for La Real. The 28-year-old midfielder also played an important role in Spain’s Euro-winning campaign, scoring the late winner against Germany in the quarter-finals. He signed two days ago, after completing his medical in London, and joined the squad for his first training session on Thursday.
However, Merino’s first day at training turned tragic, after he suffered an injury which is set to keep him out for almost a month. The Spaniard collided with a fellow Arsenal teammate Gabriel Magalhaes during the sessions, resulting in a ‘minor’ shoulder fracture. Manager Mikel Arteta, in a press conference ahead of the club’s next match against Brighton, stated that the Brazilian defender landed on top of Merino, after the new signing fell to the ground while training.

“He has a shoulder injury and it looks like he will be out for a few weeks”.

This means that the player will not feature in the club’s upcoming matches in the Premier league, which included important ones against Tottenham and Manchester City. Merino marked the club’s fourth major summer signing, with others being Riccardo Calafiori, David Raya and Neto.
Arsenal sign veteran Brazilian keeper Neto to replace Aaron Ramsdale
The Gunners have agreed to sign veteran Brazilian goalkeeper Neto from Premier League rivals Bournemouth to replace Aaron Ramsdale, who recently joined Southampton. The 35-year-old shot-stopper joins on a loan deal, after the club failed in their bid to sign Espanyol’s Joan Garcia.
Arsenal had offered a £20 million deal to sign 23-year-old Joan Garcia, but the offer was rejected by the Spanish side, who demanded in excess of £30 million. Ex-Barcelona star Neto, who has been signed instead, will replace Aaron Ramsdale. The Englishman joined the Saints to get more playing time, after being reduced to second fiddle at Arsenal behind David Raya.

Neto will bring in loads of experience, having spent time at Barcelona, Valencia, Juventus and Fiorentina. Meanwhile, the Cherries announced the signing of Kepa Arrizabalaga from Chelsea, to replace Neto.
