WATCH: Mirabai Chanu Scripts History; Wins Silver in Weightlifting at Tokyo Olympics

Mirabai Chanu at the Tokyo Olympics

Mirabai Chanu scripted history today, winning a silver medal in the women’s 49kg weightlifting category at the Tokyo Olympics. She is the first weightlifter to win a silver medal for India, and the second Indian weightlifter to win a medal of any colour. This will be India’s second medal in weightlifting after Karnam Malleswari bagged a bronze medal all the way back in the 2000 Sydney Olympics.

Mirabai finished the snatch category with a successful weight of 87kg, her personal best. She was confident going into clean and jerk, where she managed to successfully lift 115kg, securing her finish on the podium.

Mirabai lifted a weight of 87kg in her second attempt in snatch to equal her personal best, but could not manage to lift 89kg.

Chanu successfully lifted 115kgs after a valiant attempt in her second attempt to secure her place behind China’s Zhihui who set the Olympic record with a 116kg clean and jerk lift.
