‘I’d like to beat her sister first’ – Miranda Maverick targets Antonina Shevchenko next
Miranda Maverick
Miranda Maverick out-struck Gillian Robertson at the recently concluded UFC 260, to go 2-0 up in the UFC. With that win, Maverick extended her win streak to 5. The 23-year old number 15 ranked women’s flyweight looks like she will only go strength to strength from here.
At the post-fight interview, Maverick called out Valentina Shevchenko’s sister Antonina. She mentioned that she had been criticized for calling out Valentina Shevchenko after making a winning start to her career. However, she maintained that she still wanted to take on Valentina, but would like to beat her sister first.
‘Already calling out the champ!?’ – Miranda Maverick
Miranda Maverick was quoted as saying, “I’ve said in a couple of other interviews earlier that Valentina Shevchenko is the one that everybody is trying to get to. I got criticized the first time that I had my debut with the UFC. They were like, ‘Already calling out the champ?” I was like, no I didn’t. I said within two years I want to be able to fight Valentina for that title. I’m still of that mindset, and I’d like to beat her sister (Antonina Shevchenko) first.” [via MMA Junkie]
Miranda Maverick and Antonina Shevchenko boast the same record in the UFC – 9 wins and 2 losses. However, Antonina’s both the losses have come only in the UFC. She is currently 3-2 in the promotion, and is coming off a victory over Ariane Lipski at UFC 255.
Just a couple of ranks separate the two women’s flyweights, and a matchup seems to be very much possible. Can Miranda Maverick beat the older Shevchenko sister and climb up the ranks?
